IISc-led team develops footwear to prevent diabetic foot complications

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) have potentially solved the problem of injuries caused due to an abnormal gait with the help of a 3D printed ‘snapping’ footwear.

Collaborating with the Karnataka Institute of Endocrinology and Research (KIER), the researchers have developed a pair of footwear that help distribute uneven pressure caused by an abnormal gait.

The sandals are specifically designed for diabetic patients who have a slower rate of healing as well as suffer from diabetic peripheral neuropathy or diabetic nerve damage. Diabetic patients who have lost sensation in their feet are often at a higher risk of ulcers, calluses and other complications due to an abnormal gait that puts extra pressure on certain parts of the feet. This, combined with the low rate of healing, leads to infections that can eventually result in amputation.

Priyabrata Maharana, first author and one of the researchers said. To commercialise the footwear and make it widely accessible, the researchers are currently collaborating with two Bengaluru-based healthcare start-ups — Foot Secure and Yostra Labs.

Breaking into social media with Kannada content are these creators, who are producing relatable material.

There is no way one hasn’t stumbled upon Raghu Vine Store, Anu Karagada, MacMacha, MetroSaga, and Vadiraj Babaladi on their Instagram feed. These creators have garnered thousands of followers just by making digital content on platforms like Instagram, Facebook and YouTube in their mother tongue, Kannada, while making it sound relatable to the younger generation.

We already know many of them by their aliases, but here we meet the real people who are rocking it on social media.

Raghu Gowda, popularly known as Raghu Vine Store, is a former Bigg Boss contestant and has over 4,58,000 followers on Instagram. “No one had an idea that content could be made in Kannada on Instagram,” says Gowda, who is one of the pioneers of content in Kannada.

I have my own multiverse of madness on the internet,” he adds. Macwin Ian D’Souza aka ‘Mac Macha’ is another household name in Karnataka. His far-reaching and diversified content on Bengaluru’s culture has more followers than ever before.

“It’s not a conscious decision to create regional content,” he says, adding, “But it naturally flows out of me.” Vadiraj Babaladi, another digital creator from Belgaum, hails from a family of theatre artistes.

The slang may sound rude but it is fun and nice to hear,” says Babaladi. Anu Karagada, a model and content creator, is the prodigy of turning daily life scenarios into minute-long videos.

Speaking to the media after chairing a meeting with members of the Sugarcane Control Board, Sugar Minister Shankar Patil Munenakoppa said sugar factories in Karnataka have produced 59.78 lakh tonnes of sugar during the same period.

According to the minister there are 89 registered sugar factories in Karnataka of which 72 are operating. In Karnataka, 32 sugar factories are producing Ethanol, he said.

Pant Maharaj’s portrait finds a place in airport gallery

A portrait of Pant Maharaj, a 19 ^th century saint from Balekundri village, now adorns the art gallery at the Sambra Airport in Belagavi.

This is a tribute to the proponent of Avadhut Navanath philosophy who spoke of the need for love for all humans, in his books Datta Prema Lahari and Prema Tarang.

Apart from a brief biographical detail about the seer, the 64 sq ft image contains a road map and directions to Balekundri, that is just four kilometres away from the airport.

A contemporary of Swami Vivekananda, Pant Maharaj was a proponent of spiritualism devoid of strict rituals. People from various castes visit his Samadhi and temple at Balekundri. Thousands from across Karnataka and Maharashtra gather at the annual festival in December.

Pant Maharaj was born in 1855 and passed away in 1905. He worked as a teacher in Belagavi for some years, before becoming a monk. He considered Sri Balmukund and Sri Kallappa Maharaj as his Gurus.

Pant Maharaj chronicled his experiences of meditation in his books and essays. He met Swami Vivekananda when the latter visited Belagavi in 1892.

Infosys Foundation launches 4 mobile medical labs

Laboratories to provide cost effective diagnostic solutions and curb the spread of communicable diseases primarily among the rural population of Karnataka

Infosys Foundation, the CSR arm of Infosys, has launched four mobile laboratories to provide cost-effective diagnostic solutions and curb the spread of communicable diseases primarily among the rural population of Karnataka.

The Infosys Foundation had signed an MoU with the Rotary Bangalore Southwest Charitable Trust (Rotary Trust), to support with a grant of ₹4 crore to make these mobile medical laboratories, called ‘Lab Built on Wheels’, said a media release.

The Rotary Trust has collaborated with Saicorp Health Technologies (SHTPL) who have set up these labs in accordance with BSL level 2 safety standards. Each mobile lab will be equipped with a medical unit, pharmacy, and a minimal invasive emergency care unit, as per the statement.

Krish Shankar, Executive Vice-President, Group HR Head, Infosys & Trustee, Infosys Foundation said, “This is part of a continuous effort by Infosys Foundation to ensure that the underprivileged people in India have affordable, on-time access to clean, hygienic, and appropriate medical treatment and healthcare.’‘

Commuters who boarded the first train from the Sir. M. Visvesvaraya Terminal, Baiyappanahalli (SMVB Terminal), on Monday evening were pleasantly surprised to finally use the swanky airport-like air-conditioned railway station.

“It looks like an airport and it was hard to believe. I reached here using Google Maps, but was taken aback after I reached here. I asked the auto driver twice whether this was indeed the railway station I was supposed to be dropped at,” said Amal, a commuter who travelled to Ernakulam on the first train from the terminal.

Most commuters were appreciative of the facilities and the state-of-the-art interiors of the railway station, one of its kind in the country. “The facilities at the station are very good — escalators, air-conditioning, food court, the lounges — definitely much better than any station. The terminal is definitely a great addition to a global city like Bengaluru,” said Sri Priya, another commuter.

Domestic and international flyers at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) can now relax at the luxurious ‘080 Lounges’, recently unveiled by Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL).

All the aspects in the domestic and the international lounges, including art, artisans, and heritage, revolve around Bengaluru and even the name, 080 is attributed to the city’s trunk dial code.

While the first phase of the project is now open, once the second phase is also inaugurated, each lounge will occupy a space of over 2,000 square feet.
