India’s First Red Bull Flutag. September 2014.

1st Red Bull Flutag, Sankey Tank, Bangalore

September 28th, 2014, Sankey Tank in Sadashivnagar, Bangalore played a full-house host to over 10,000 fun lovers and Bangaloreans today.

36 human-powered flying machines took off from a high flight deck placed 22-feet above the lake. The Winner was ‘Visar-Jet’ from Mumbai. First Runner-Up ‘Talpade’ (Bangalore) and 2nd Runner-Up was ‘Majestic Beast’ (Nagpur).

Bangalore was the city of choice to launch the 1st ever Red Bull Flutag in India making it the 141st edition edition. With this India has joined the list of 47 countries worldwide.

Red Bull Flutag:

An international event where participants (teams of 4) are required to build a human-powered aircraft and fly it off an elevated ramp that extends into a water body. The 1st Red Bull Flutag took place in Vienna, Austria in 1992. A decade later in the U.S. Subsequently over 140 editions have been held across the world.

Sankey Tank, Bangalore:

1882. Created in the 18th century it is one of Bangalore’s leading land marks.

First Woman SP of Kodagu District, Karnataka : August 2014

Vartika Katiyar

August 2014. Indian Police Service (IPS) Officer, Vartika Katiyar took charge as the new Superintendent of Police (SP) – of Kodagu district, Madikeri.

Earlier she was Additional SP of Gokak (Belgaum district) and now replaces her predecessor M.N. Anucheth whose new posting is Chitradurga.

Vartika Katiyar a native of Uttar Pradesh is an Officer of the 2010 batch.

Karnataka’s First ‘ Giant ‘ brand premium Cycle store opens in Bangalore : July 2014

July 2014. The first Bangalore outlet showcases ‘Giant’ brand premium luxury bicycles within Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 11 lakh range.

The facility is spread over 3,200 sq.ft and includes a bike simulator, bike spa, bike library, bike cafe and a display of the ‘Giant’ bicycle range.

The fastest bicycle in the world – The Propel Advaned SL O is used by Giant Shimano Tour de France team.

First Indian to receive Yale University’s – “Legend in Leadership Award” : November 2009

Nandan Nilekani, Bangalore

November 09th, 2009. Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani was the first Indian to be felicitated with the top honour of receiving the ‘Legend in Leadership Award” from Yale University.

The award was presented by Richard C. Levin, President, Yale University at the Yale CEO Leadership Summit of The Chief Executive Leadership Institute.

The ‘Legend in Leadership Award’ was created by Yale University about 24 years ago to honour current and former CEO’s who serve as living legends to inspire Chief Executives across industries, sectors and nations.

Karnataka – First time vaccination for small pox . 1806

1806 . Vaccination for small pox in Mysore, Mysore State (now Karnataka)

For the first time in the State, Dewan Purnaiah introduced vaccine for small pox in 1806 according to Mysore Gazetteer.

Brief:

Purnaiah was a Minister under Tipu Sultan (Tiger of Mysore). Subsequent to the death of Tipu Sultan in the IVth Mysore War of May 1799, the Kingdom of Mysore was restored to the Wadiyars. Purnaiah was made the Dewan of the Kingdom of Mysore.

First Tulu Script released in Unicode : September 2014

Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy

Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy has for the first time released the Unicode version of the Tulu script.

Language specialist and editor of Tulu Dictionary U.P.Upadhyaya released a CD of Tulu in Unicode.

Consequently the Tulu language spoken in the Coastal Districts of Udupi, Dakshin Kannada and Kasargod come onto the world-language platform.

This now allows the easy typing of the Tulu script on the keyboard as well as translation of Tulu script to other languages.

The first Dunkin’ Donuts outlet was inaugurated in Brigade Road, Bangalore on Thursday, September 11th, 2014.

This is also the first outlet opened in South India. With this launch the UDS-based chain Dunkin’ Donuts has 36 outlets in India. The first were opened in New Delhi and Mumbai.

150 years ago  the Sarada Vilas Anglo-Sanskrit Pathashala was Founded by Rao Bahadur Bhakshi Narsappa. The vision and project was supported by the King Sri Mummadi Krishnaraja Wadiyar and was started and housed inside the premises of a Palace Temple with 20 students.
