Mangaluru girl bags three medals at national swimming event

Alyssa Sweedal Rego clinched gold in the 100m freestyle event

Twelve-year-old Alyssa Sweedal Rego from Mangaluru has won a gold and two silver medals in the individual swimming events at the 38 th Sub Junior National Aquatic Championship held in Rajkot between June 24 and June 26.

Ms. Rego, a Class 6 student from Ladyhill English Primary School, clinched gold in the 100 metre freestyle event in which she clocked 1:07.81 minutes. She won a silver medal each in 50 metre butterfly and 200 metre freestyle events respectively. She was also part of the Karnataka team that secured bronze in the 4X50 medley relay event.

This is the second national event that Ms. Rego has participated. It was her performance in the individual and team events at the state level swimming competition in Belagavi between May 26 and 29 that led to her selection for the national event in Rajkot.

The young Ms. Rego started swimming at the age of three, when she accompanied her brother Alaister Samuel Rego, a Class 10 student from St. Aloysius School and a national level swimmer, to the swimming pool. The two are being trained by Lokraj Vitla of We One Aqua Centre at the St. Aloysius Swimming Pool.

Mangaluru: Coconut pickle, rusk, papad – Innovation by farm producer company

The price of coconut has slumped to all time low. The farmers who earn their livelihood through coconut farming are devastated. However, a coconut farm produce company in Dakshina Kannada is trying to get good returns to coconut farmers by producing pickle, papad and rusk from coconut.

“Coconut pickle is manufactured using 10 month ripe coconut. Oil content will be less in this. That is why the pickle will not get spoilt for long time. Right now one lac bottle of coconut pickle is ready. Our intention is to release the same in Kerala, Gujarat and overseas market,” says president of the company Prasad Shetty.

Vice president of the company Kusumaraj says, “Pickle manufacturing is under process as coconuts selected from farmers are sent to research division of Bengaluru. Later a manufacturing unit will be established in Puttur.”

Media personnel celebrate Press Day, Brand Mangaluru Award presented

The presence of a large number of media personnel marked the Press Day celebrations and the Brand Mangaluru Award was presented at the Press Club here on Friday July 1.

The Brand Mangaluru Award was conferred on Na Karanatha Peraje, sub-editor of Adike newspaper.

Speaking on the occasion, Rashmi S R, district officer of backward classes, mentioned that the Covid-19 period was a difficult one and media played a crucial role during the pandemic.

After receiving the Brand Mangaluru award, Na Karantha Peraje shared about his humble background and how he owed all his achievements to his village upbringing.

“I am glad the story on the rains made it to the awards, Nineteen years ago, it was meant to tie the feelings of the village. I would go about wandering around the village premises. That’s how I garnered a lot of things. Back in the villages, the mediapersons are seen as a godly figures. Their perspective is distinct.” he said.

Speaking on the occasion, Anil Shastry from The Hindu daily said, “Brand Mangaluru was one of the key events which one was looking up to eagerly.”

President of Dakshina Kannada district working journalist union Srinivas Nayak Indaje welcomed the gathering, General secretary Jitendra Kundeshwara compered the event and Pushparaj rendered the vote of thanks.

Dechamma Poonacha wins Mrs. Fitness Queen at Mrs. UAE International

Dechamma Poonacha(Dechamma A.P) has won the Mrs Fitness Queen Title at Mrs UAE International by ‘Being Muskaan’, a leading UAE based brand launched by Meena Asrani, focused towards women empowerment.

The contest was held on June 26th at Radisson Red, Dubai Silicon Oasis and was open to all nationalities residing in UAE.

Mrs. Dechamma is currently a home maker. She is a former student of Rotary English Medium School Moodbidri and also was the student of the first batch. 

She further continued her high school an PU education at Jain highschool and PU college Moodbidri.

She pursued her graduation at Sri Bhuvanendra College Karkala where she won Miss. Bhuvanendra in 1997 and Miss. Jaycee Kulyadi queen, Karlala in 1998.

She was born in Coorg but was raised in Moodbidri.
