** Mangaluru: Nitte University receives international recognition for green initiatives

Nitte (Deemed to be University) has been ranked 253rd in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings in 2021. These international rankings recognize the contributions of universities across the world to policies and actions related to green campus and environmental sustainability. NitteDU participated in this ranking survey for the first time in 2021.

A total of 956 Universities from 84 countries participated in the rankings this year. The survey evaluates 39 indicators related to environment friendly infrastructure,energy, climate change,waste management,water, transportationand education.Nitte Institutions promote sustainable practices on campus and encourage students to be sensitive to environmental issues.

Originally written in Kannada by renowned scholar and historian, Dr. S. Srikanta Sastri (1904-1974) under the title “Bharathiya Samskruthi” in 1954, this compendium of Indian history, culture and heritage has seen six reprints since then and now it has been translated into English by his son, Prof. S. Naganath, retired Professor of English of the Bangalore University, to cater to a wider section of non-Kannada knowing readers. 

Dr. Srikanta Sastri was Professor of History and Indology at the Maharaja’s College, Mysuru, from 1925 to 1960. Besides his academic work, his significant contribution includes five books in English and seven in Kannada. Proficient in as many as 15 languages, the Professor has written 116 research articles in English and 122 in Kannada, a collection of some of them has also been published under the title “Samshodana Lekhanagalu,” besides eight in Telugu, one each in Sanskrit and Hindi

** Telugu writer chosen for Kuvempu National Award

Rashtrakavi Kuvempu Pratishtana based in Kuppali in Thirthahalli taluk has chosen noted Telugu writer P Satyavathi for Kuvempu National Award for the year 2021.

It would be conferred on her in a programme slated to be held in Shivamogga district on December 29.

Though Bengaluru was always a green city, it earned the title of Garden City because of one particular person – Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel. And city-based filmmaker Ganesh Shankar Raj’s latest documentary, The Maharaja’s German Gardener, is based on the story of this German botanist. The movie released on YouTube channel, Mindia

** Niranjana Vanalli’s book on Tajikistan to be released today

Tashakur Tajikistan’, a non-fiction work by Niranjana Vanalli, Vice-Chancellor of Bengaluru North University, will be released in the city on Friday.

A well-known columnist, writer and academician who held various positions in the University of Mysore before his current assignment, Prof.Niranjana, had served as the Director of Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, under Embassy of India in Tajikistan during 2018-19. He has penned his experience in this work which presents a positive picture of this country.

The book, which is introducing this country for the first time in Kannada language, is unique in many respects and ‘Tashakur’ means thank you in Tajik language, according to Prof. Niranjana.

** Award To Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy

Bengaluru-based Ajithkumar Smaraka Samskrithika Vedike, in memory of Ajithkumar, presented the National Award “Ajithsree Santana-2021” to Dr. Vasundhara Doraswamy for her outstanding contribution to the field of Bharathanatya at a function held at Kondajji Basappa Auditorium, Bharat Scouts and Guides premises, Bengaluru, on Dec.11

** Merit scholarships for MSc (Food Technology) students at CFTRI

A function was organised at CFTRI in Mysuru on Thursday to distribute the Kerry scholarship to students securing the highest marks in the entrance exams for its MSc (Food Technology) for the 2021-23 batch.

A statement from CFTRI said the scholarships were bagged by Riya Saini, Krishna Kumar Upadhyay and Valcea Pearl D’Cunha.

The merit scholarships have been instituted by Kerry Ingredients India Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, a manufacturer of food ingredients, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities. The scholarship, which starts from 2021-22, consists of tuition fees, boarding and lodging fee and development fee.
