** Parasailing starts as a weekend must-do at Bengaluru’s Jakkur

The new weekend attraction in town is parasailing, started by the department of youth empowerment and sports, along with General Thimayya National Academy of Adventure (Gethnaa). 

Parasailing at Jakkur started on December 12, and was an instant hit with around 25 people taking to the air. The department has now decided to make it a weekly affair, to be held every Sunday.

** 5-yr-old in Bengaluru sets world record in coding

Five-year-old Sunvisha C Nair, a student of Christ KG at SG Palya, has emerged as the ‘world’s youngest person to code decimal and its corresponding octal, hexadecimal and binary coding of 1-15, in a number system’. 

With this, the child, who was 4 years 11 months 13 days-old at the time of her record, has written the binary, octal and hexadecimal equivalent of the decimal (conventionally-used everyday number system) from 1 to 15.

** DFRL’s ready-to-eat menu for Gaganyaan mission

A slew of technologies showcased at two-day expo

The Defence Food Research Laboratory (DFRL) in Mysuru has prepared a slew of ready-to-eat dishes tailor-made for India’s space programme Gaganyaan.

The DFRL has prepared about 40 to 50 menus comprising both vegetarian and non-vegetarian items and the trials are in the preliminary stages.

The items include potato-stuffed paratha, vegetable biriyani, dal chawal, sambar chawal, rajma chawal, kichdi, preserved chapatis, veg katti roll, chicken biriyani, chicken katti roll, egg katti roll, chikki, instant tea and coffee mix, sooji halwa, garlic and mango pickle, and tomato sauce.

Some of the technologies developed by the DFRL were on display at the two-day exhibition of technologies and products to mark Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav which commenced here on Monday.

** Writer Rajeshwari Tejaswi passes away

She wrote her first book shortly after the demise of her husband, and was an account of their life together

Rajeshwari Tejaswi, 84, writer and wife of late writer K. P. Poornachandra Tejaswi, passed away in Bengaluru on December 14.

Rajeshwari began writing only after the death of Tejaswi in 2007. She wrote her first book ‘Nanna Tejaswi’ shortly after Tejaswi’s demise, and was an account of their life together. The book went on to have over six reprints. She later wrote a personal memoir titled ‘Namma Menegoo Bandaru Gandhiji’. Apart from being a writer, she was a passionate philatelist and gardener. She collected rare seeds during her travels.

She had been actively involved in the activities of K.P. Poornachandra Tejaswi Trust at Kottigehara in Mudigere taluk.

** NGO helps iron wallahs migrate from coal to LPG-powered boxes

A pilot revealed that the shift resulted in increased productivity and earnings and reduced health issues

Udhyam Vyapaar, a part of Udhyam Learning Foundation, a Bengaluru-based NGO founded by ex-Flipkart CPO Mekin Maheshwari, is trying to iron out the problems faced by iron wallahs by helping them migrate from coal to LPG-powered boxes.

** Dr Ronald Colaco conferred ‘Koti-Chennaya Award’ at Moodbidri Kambala

Well-known NRI entrepreneur and philanthropist Dr Ronald Colaco was honoured with the ‘Koti-Chennaya Award’ during the 19th Koti-Chennaya Jodukare Kambala held on Saturday December 11 and Sunday December 12 near here.

** Wins U-18 Tourney In Vancouver

Mysuru boy, 14-year-old Mustafa Raja won his first U-18 Tournament in Vancouver, Canada, today.

Mustafa, seeded fifth in the Tennis BC U18 4 Star Tournament, held his nerves at crucial moments, saving two match points in the finals, winning the tournament defeating the top seeded player Denny Bao 2,6; 7,6(7) and 6,1.

By virtue of this win, Mustafa became the top player in his age category in British Columbia and Top 4 in Canada. Mustafa trains at the Tennis Centre in Surrey, Vancouver and studies at the Sullivan heights Secondary School.

From a 70-year-old violin to a timeless guitar, the D’Silva twins have been repairing and restoring musical instruments for over half-a-century. Octogenarian brothers Ronald and Donald D’Silva from the coastal village of Salumara Kodavoor near Malpe in Udupi district have been giving a new lease of life to musical instruments that are in dire need of repair.
