Koppal: Kannadiga selling peanuts on Goa beaches joins British army

The inspiring story of a boy born in a family experiencing abject poverty, who began to sell peanuts at the Goan beaches to support the family, going on to become a part of the British army will soon turn into a biopic. Gopal Wakode’s story is sure to give wings to the dreams of many poor youngsters whose life mostly is spent struggling with the problems of feeding the family members.

Gopal Wakode from Shahapur village in Koppal district was born into a family that was poor and illiterate. In a surprising development, the boy wriggled out of the family problems and joined the British army. He is currently serving the British military base in East Midlands, England.

** Krishna Joshi passes away

A teacher, journalist and Kannada activist, Krishna Joshi, who served Karnataka Vidyavardhaka Sangha, Dharwad, for long in different capacities, passed away at a private hospital in Goa on Tuesday night. He was 76.

Krishna Joshi served the sangha as treasurer for two terms and was executive committee member for long. He participated in various Kannada agitations and actively coordinated various literary and cultural programmes. He has to his credit a unique record of having written nearly 80,000 letters on different issues.

For CV Prakash — a former naval officer who is also recognised as an expert in soil-less agriculture — making turmeric (Curcuma longa) more profitable for the ordinary farmer has become a passion during lockdown.

His ongoing Mission Turmeric 2021 aims to begin an “orange revolution”, he says, by teaching people to cultivate the spice in grow bags (large porous containers made of high density polyethelene) packed with coco-peat (made from the pith of the coconut husk) instead of soil, in shade houses.

Dr Sharma accepts just ten rupees from the patients. He speaks to patients with a smile, cuts jokes, instils confidence in his patients, and charges only ten rupees. The people lovingly call him with the name, ‘ten rupee doctor’.

Dr Sharma has never fixed any rate for the treatment and never sought a fee based on individual health checks he does. He has been serving as doctor at Guruvayanakere for the last three decades. Even during the corona period, he charges ten rupees to poor people.

** Mangaluru: ‘Patrode’ earns place in Ayush list of traditional, beneficial dishes

‘Patrode’, a popular dish of coastal Karnataka and Malnad region that is made from Colocasia (taro) leaves, has been recognized by the union Ayush ministry as a traditional food under Ayush system of medicines.

The ministry has prepared a booklet in which names of 26 food items have been listed. Patrode has occupied a place of pride in this list.

This booklet is also available in the website of the department now. Along with each of the items listed, photos, recipe, and health benefits have been listed.

** India’s first tunnel aquarium opens at KSR railway station

From now on, anyone waiting to board a train, or to receive someone, at the KSR railway station can look forward to an exciting and relaxing activity.

For, a first of its kind aquatic kingdom set up in any railway station in India will be launched in the concourse portion at the entry of the station on Thursday. The joint venture by the Indian Railway Station Development Corporation (IRSDC) and HNI Enterprises was planned for an April launch, but the Covid second wave delayed it.

** Remembering the work of Fa.Gu. Halakatti

Amid the COVID-19 restrictions, several organisations across North Karnataka region held symbolic programmes on Friday remembering the contributions of Fa.Gu. Halakatti, the man credited with ‘reviving Lingayatism’ through his efforts of collecting and publishing ‘vachanas’ in the first half of the 20th century.

** National Doctors’ Day: Miyar gram panchayat gets an ambulance

Miyar Gram Panchayat in Karkala taluk got a dedicated ambulance thanks to an initiative of the Cardiology At Doorsteps (CAD) Foundation to mark National Doctors’ Day on July 1.

Padmanabha Kamath, founder of CAD Foundation Trust, said Miyar GP becomes the first panchayat in India to have its own ECG machine, telemedicine unit and a dedicated ambulance. Each member of the panchayat contributed ₹1,000 from their salary for the initiative, he said.
