** Bengaluru joins global network of silk cities

Bengaluru has become the first Indian city to get into the global network of silk cities, celebrated French textile artist Isabelle Moulin said in Kolkata, expressing hope that in the next few years West Bengal’s Murshidabad district — known to produce fine silk in the over the past 300 years — may join the global silk city network.

“Two days ago, I launched the membership of Bengaluru — the first Indian city in the global Silk City network. Now, we have nine countries and 13 cities. If everything goes fine, then with time, I hope ‘Murshidabad Silk’ too can make it to the network. The network helps artisans and craftsmen to exchange knowledge, build trade relations and understand various craftsmanship techniques,” Ms. Moulin said during an interactive session with select media persons at Kolkata’s Oxford Bookstore.

** 90 toppers to receive gold medals at BCU’s first convocation tomorrow

Ninety toppers will be awarded with gold medals and cash prizes at the first convocation of Bengaluru City University that will be held on Monday. Honorary doctorates will also be conferred on V. Ravichandran (cinema), M.R. Jaishankar (social service) and Sathyanarayana (medicine).

Prof. Gandhi said that seven donors had each contributed ₹6 lakh, which has since been deposited. The university will be getting ₹30,000 as interest from each of the endowments, of which ₹20,000 will be given away as cash prize and ₹10,000 will be used for the gold medals. The varsity medals will originally be made of silver, which will be dipped in gold, he said.

** IIM-B convocation: 690 students graduate; 9 win gold medals

A total of 690 students across programmes, nine of whom were awarded gold medals, graduated from the institute.

Covid-19: NGO finds a way to improve learning retention among children in rural Karnataka

An out-of-the-box thinking, which led to educated senior students mentoring their juniors during the Covid-19 pandemic, has resulted in better learning retention in a few villages in Mysuru district.

Conceived by Pratham Mysore, an NGO working in the field of education, the Student Mentoring Programme (SMP) has caught the imagination of a few educationists who intend to introduce mentoring as a compulsory subject in the B.Ed course.

Explaining the genesis of Student Mentoring Programme, Ashvini Ranjan, who is pioneering Pratham Mysore’s activities in the region, said that the NGO had launched a Model Village Programme in 2017. Under this programme, it adopted Hyaknur, Mavinahalli, Sujjalur and Muthathi in T. Narsipura taluk to shore up the learning abilities of children in government schools.

Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), operator of Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, is working with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to establish a Joint Innovation Center (JIC) to drive the development and adoption of digital solutions in aviation.

The JIC will enable startups to accelerate innovation in aviation, smart infrastructure, utilities, and mobility by providing comprehensive programme offerings and a technical platform that helps customers innovate quickly by utilising AWS technology.

The JIC, the first such initiative dedicated to advancing the aviation industry, is expected to open at Bengaluru airport in 2022 and will focus on driving digital innovation for the airport, enhancing passenger experience, and creating a positive impact on the community where the airport operates.

** Organ donation: In a first, three green corridors created on a single day

Cadaveric organ donation got a boost in the city on Wednesday with three zero-traffic green corridors created on a single day to transport vital organs from different hospitals.

Authorities from Jeevasarthakathe, the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTTO), which is the nodal agency that facilitates cadaver organ donations, said this is the first time that three green corridors had been created on a single day. There were back-to-back organ donations since Tuesday evening and two green corridors were also created on Tuesday night – one in Mangaluru and another in Bengaluru.

“We placed the requests for three green corridors with the Bengaluru traffic police in a gap of 30 minutes. While one green corridor was created at 10 a.m. on Wednesday from Manipal Hospitals on Old Airport Road to BGS Global Hospitals in Mysuru (to transport a liver), another was created at 10.30 a.m. from Aster RV hospital to MS Ramaiah-Narayana Hrudayalaya (to transport a heart). At 11 a.m., another corridor was created from the same hospital (Aster RV) to Bengaluru International airport to transport donated lungs to KIMS, Secunderabad

** Burn victims tell their stories as part of Women’s History Month

As part of Women’s History Month, Aweksha, a newly formed women’s public trust, brought together about a dozen survivors of burns, including victims of domestic violence.

“The survivors, through their testimonies, established that most of the burn injuries endured by women are not due to stove bursts or cooking accidents, but are calculated and deliberate attempts by their spouses to take their lives,” according to a release.

Director of the Ministry of Women and Child Development Priyanka Mary Francis and Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women Prameela Naidu, who were part of the programme, assured the survivors of the support of various government departments to ensure educational support for their children and offer of soft loans for their businesses.

** HAL-Israel sign MoU for conversion civil aircraft into Multi Mission Tanker Transport Aircraft

In a move aimed at bolstering the ‘Make in India’ campaign, HAL has entered into a MoU with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to convert Civil (Passenger) aircraft to Multi Mission Tanker Transport (MMTT) aircraft in India.

The move will provide India’s defence ecosystem with new capabilities and cost effective solutions in the market. The MoU will facilitate HAL and IAI’s decades’ long expertise in developing, manufacturing and producing leading defence platforms.

The scope of MoU also covers “passenger to freighter aircraft” conversion along with MMTT conversions.

A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Delhi by D Maiti, CEO (MiG Complex), HAL and Yaacov Berkovitz, Vice President and General Manager, Aviation Group, IAI in the presence of Chandraker Bharati, JS (Aero), Ministry of Defence, Goveernment of India.

“We are glad to join hands with our long standing partner IAI in this venture of MMTT conversion business which is one of the strategic diversification avenues identified by HAL”, said R Madhavan, CMD, HAL.
