** Bangalore Baptist Hospital: Giving hope to kids with spinal muscular atrophy

On the sets of KBC, Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) suddenly got the limelight it deserved when Amitabh Bachchan announced that he would like to donate for the Rs 16 crore one-time Zolgensma drug for a child suffering from this fatal rare disease.

The drug, the most expensive in the world, and Spinraza that costs Rs 78 lakh per vial (needed for a lifetime) are administered to children with SMA, at Bangalore Baptist Hospital, which is home to India’s only paediatric neuromuscular centre.

** Bengaluru startup among the winners of IAF drone contest

Bengaluru-based start-up Newspace Research and Technologies Private Limited was among the three firms that won the “Mehar Baba Swarm Drone Competition” conducted by the Indian Air Force (IAF).

IAF Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari on Sunday, October 24, 2021, presented awards to Newspace Research and Technologies Private Limited (Best Swarm Architecture), Team Delhi Technological University-Flair Unmanned Systems Private Limited (Best Communication Architecture) and Dhaksha Unmanned Systems Private Limited from Anna University, Chennai (Best Drone Architecture), at IAF station, Yelahanka, Bengaluru.

A total of 154 teams had registered for the competition conducted in line with the central government’s “Atma Nirbhar Bharat” initiative.

** Winning strokes

All eyes are on  11-year-old Bengaluru swimmer Dhinidhi Desinghu, as she creates two records in the ongoing sub-junior  and junior nationals.

She’s just 11, but Bengaluru girl Dhinidhi Desinghu has a clear vision of her goals. Working towards becoming a ‘top swimmer and feature in the Olympics’, Dhinidhi is pushing herself hard to realise her dreams. If her achievements are anything to go by, she, for a start, is on the right track.

In the ongoing 37th sub junior and 47th junior National Aquatic Championship here, she created two new national records in the 200m individual medley and 200m freestyle, both in group III girls. She was the best swimmer in her age group at the state-level competition last month too.

** Karnataka ranks third among larger States in administering first dose

Karnataka has administered the third highest number of first doses among larger States in the country. In terms of coverage per million population, Karnataka is in the fifth position.

Contributing 6.2% of the total 100 crore doses administered in the country till Thursday, Karnataka has covered 84.7% (4,15,10,701) of the 4.9 crore eligible population with the first dose. Gujarat has covered 90.2% of its population with one dose, and Madhya Pradesh 89.5%, according to data from CoWIN.

** Mangalurean Apeksha Fernandes shines in national level swimming competition

Apeksha Fernandes bagged 3 gold and one silver in a national level swimming competition at Bengaluru.

Apeksha is the 16-year-old daughter of Bavlon and Shalet Fernandes and hails from Mangaluru. She is presently living in Mumbai and a student of Bunts Sangha’s S M Shetty International School and Junior College, Powai. Apeksha trains under Dr Mohan Reddy at the IIT Bombay pool and the Hiranandani Forest club.

Apeksha took part in the junior nationals under the category group 1 under age group of 15-17 where she bagged four medals including three gold. She will next take part in senior nationals from October 26 to 29 at Basavanagudi in Bengaluru.

** IMF Chief Economist Gita Gopinath to leave job and return to Harvard University

She had joined the IMF as the Chief Economist in January 2019

IMF’s Chief Economist Gita Gopinath will leave her job in January next year and return to the prestigious Harvard University, according to the global financial institution.

The 49-year-old prominent Indian-American economist had joined the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as the Chief Economist in January 2019.

She was the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University when she joined the Washington-based global lender.

Mysuru-born Gopinath is the first-ever woman Chief Economist of the IMF.

** Mangaluru: Ahana Adiga of St Agnes School bags silver medal in Internataional Yoga

The Adwaitha Yogalaya and Dev Yoga Centre Hyderabad organised the first International World Yoga Sports Day competition held on September 19, 2021. It was an online platform to showcase the talents with various Yoga asanas.

The student of St Agnes School, Ahana Adiga of grade V D has bagged Silver Medal in the competition and has made the school proud. The various asanas displayed showcase the talent and practice by the student in gaining victory.

** Udupi: MIT bags 1st runner up position at Amex’s flagship annual hackathon ‘CodeStreet’

Manipal Institute of Technology (MIT), engineering college of Manipal Academy of Higher Education added yet another feather to its cap by securing 1st Runners Up position in the ‘American Express CodeStreet hackathon’ national challenge with the theme ‘Open Banking’.

From MIT, team ‘Ipseity’ comprising of four students from Manipal Institute of Technology –Mini Shail Chhabra (CSE Dept), Praseedha Praveen Kalbhavi (ICT Dept), Pratyaksh Gupta (EEE Dept), and Shreya Tewari (ECE Dept). 

** AITA CS7 Tennis Tournament: Mysuru Girl Wins Double Crown

Mysuru’s upcoming tennis player Arzan Khorakiwala, a product of the Raghuveer Tennis Academy, Mysuru, taking part in the AITA CS7 U-14 Tennis Tournament conducted by Tenniglo Tennis Academy at Coimbatore, won the U-14 Girls Singles and Doubles titles.

** Flying mobile towers may up India’s broadband penetration

Bengaluru start-up, VFLYX India, the drone tech arm of e-com platform for electronic/tech gadgets, XBOOM Utilities, is now doing R&D to introduce such drones. A proof of concept is expected to be ready in a year, as per the firm.

A swarm of long-flying drones, powered either by solar, electric, gasoline or hybrid engines have to be used to create a mobile tower environment (they become both receivers and repeaters) to ensure seamless Internet and mobile access to people in no-connectivity areas, said Rohit Dey, CTO, UAV/Drones at VFLYX.
