** Asia Cup hockey: Hassan boy to represent India

Sheshe Gowda B.M., a hockey player from Hassan, has been selected to represent India in the upcoming Asia Cup tourney to be held in Jakarta in Indonesia between May 23 and June 1. He is said to be the first hockey player from Hassan to get a chance to represent the country.

Sheshe Gowda participated in senior national hockey championships and won gold in 2017, 2019, bronze in 2018 and silver in 2021. He also won gold in the all-India university tourney in 2014. Before that, he won bronze in the 2011 national championship (under 17). For the first time, he is taking part in an international event.

“Now I have got an opportunity to represent the country in an international tourney. I am happy for getting selected”, Sheshe Gowda told The Hindu over phone. Right now, he is attending a training camp in Bengaluru. Two other players from Karnataka selected to take part in the Asia Cup tourney are S.V. Sunil and Abaran Sudev. Both are from Kodagu.

** Making a splash

As a sportsperson, irrespective of age, no emotion comes close to the joy of winning a gold for the country. 14-year-old swimmer Ridhima Veerendra Kumar, is no different. Kumar, bagged three golds at the South Africa National Swimming Championships 2022, with athletes from the world taking part in the event. 

The teen from Bengaluru grabbed medals in the 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke and the 800m freestyle events. “It’s a whole different experience competing in another country. We got to train with South African coaches and their swimmers too,” says Kumar. 

Of late, swimming as a sport has been getting a lot of attention as Vedaant Madhavan, son of actor R Madhavan, recently won gold in the men’s 800m freestyle at the Danish Open in Copenhagen. Kumar is quite happy with the positive attention the sport is getting. “Not just me, even seniors are doing pretty well too,” says the student of Delhi Public School, South, who trains at the Basavanagudi Aquatic Centre.

The medals and glory don’t come without a disciplined lifestyle and Kumar cannot emphasise its importance. Her day starts at 4.30 am and she is in the pool by 5 am. “I train in the mornings between 5.30 am and 8.30 am and evenings at the same time. In between, I have school and the gym to balance,” says Kumar, who takes care of her nutritional needs with home-cooked meals.

** Indian environmental scientist elected to U.S. National Academy of Sciences

Conservation biologist Kamal Bawa has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Kamal Bawa is president of the Bengaluru-based Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment (ATREE) as well as an elected fellow of the Royal Society (London) and the American Philosophical Society.

“The election is a reaffirmation of our important work on the ecology, conservation, and management of tropical forests that are declining all over the world but are critical to humanity’s well-being,” said Dr. Bawa.

A few years ago, Dr. Bawa brought together scientists from India’s leading institutions to develop the National Mission on Biodiversity and Human Wellbeing under the banner of the Biodiversity Collaborative. The effort was supported by the office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, and is currently funded by the Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies.

** Karnataka’s first floating bridge in Udupi to be inaugurated today

While on the bridge, a visitor can feel the sea wave movement and can enjoy his walk. It will be like riding on the waves

The State’s first floating bridge will be inaugurated on Malpe Beach in Udupi on Friday.

According to Sudesh Shetty, lease holder, Malpe Beach, the bridge will be inaugurated in the presence of Udupi MLA K. Raghupati Bhat and Deputy Commissioner M. Kurma Rao.

The bridge will be an added attraction to increase tourist footfall in Udupi. The bridge, set up at a cost of ₹80 lakh invested by three local entrepreneurs, is 100 m long.

** Bengalureans training for ‘highest marathon in the world’

Ladakh marathon is back after two years, the event will be held from September 7 to 11

There are marathons, and then there is the Ladakh Marathon. Touted by the organisers to be the highest and amongst the toughest marathons comprising two ultra races – the 72-km Khardung La Challenge (5370 m) — the world’s highest ultra marathon — and the 122-km Silk Route Ultra — the ‘epitome of high-altitude running testing the limits of human endurance’.

Back after two years, the marathon will be held from September 7 to 11. Marathon runners in Bengaluru are training hard for the event.

Asif Ahmed, 37, an IT professional, said acclimatising to the climate and altitude is a necessity. He is focusing on training in the hills and is travelling to Ooty and Kodaikanal in Tamil Nadu, and increasing the mileage gradually. “If someone is a seasoned runner or ultra distance runner, six months training is enough,” he said, but added that ‘Ladakh is more difficult because of the altitude, temperature, and harsh weather’.

** K.L. Rahul Becomes 1st Player To Make Unique Record In IPL With Century Versus Mumbai Indians

If there were any doubts that K.L. Rahul loves to play against Mumbai Indians (MI), they were put to rest yesterday as he slammed his second century against the Rohit Sharma-led side in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 season.

He matched his 103 against them in their first fixture at the Brabourne Stadium, but stayed unbeaten at the Wankhede Stadium as Lucknow Super Giants won by 36 runs. It was Rahul’s third century against Mumbai Indians overall, with him having scored one for Punjab Kings in 2019.

** Mangaluru: Student of SJEC bags first place in National Junior Classic Powerlifting Championship

Aren Joy Fernandes, a third-year student of Electronics and Communication Engineering of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) here, brought laurels to the college by winning first place in National Junior Classic Powerlifting Championship held at Alappuzha, Kerala held from April 9 to 13. He created national records by lifting squat 230 kg, and dead lift 283 kg amassing a total weight of 653 kg. Alongside writing 3 national records, he also lifted a 140 kg bench press during the event.

Aren, son of Jude David Fernandes and Anandi Diana Fernandes, entered sports at a very young age and has 6 gold, 3 silver and 2 silver medals to his credit in various state, national and international level championships.

** Exhibition of traditional games to mark Ramsons Kala Pratishtana’s 50th year

The Ramsons Kala Pratishtana, an organisation promoting handicrafts is conducting an exhibition of traditional games as part of its golden jubilee celebrations.

Though the pratishtana completed 50 years two years ago, the anniversary celebrations were postponed owing to COVID-19 pandemic. A release said there are two components to the exhibition – Kreedaa Kaushalya and Hasti Mangala – which were inaugurated on Sunday. The exhibition is open to public at Ramsons opposite the zoo till December 31, 2022.

The Kreeda Kaushalya is an exhibition of traditional boardgames which features about 30 varieties of  indoor board games that were once played across the length and breadth of the sub-continent. The games on display include Chauka Bara, Adu Huli, Pagaday, Chaduranga, Aligulimane, Navakankari, Paramapada, Sixteen Sepoys, Panchi, Vimana, Pancha Keliya, Nav Keti Keta, Pretwa, Dash Guti, Shara Vyuha, Ashtapada, Taabla, Anay Kattu, Hasu Chirate, Huli Kallu, Immadi Huli Kattu, Egara Guti, etc.

** Para-swimmers win big

A team of para-swimmers won 42 medals at the 21st National Para-Swimming Championships at Udaipur in Rajasthan recently.

They won 28 gold medals, 6 silver medals and 8 bronze medals. More than 500 para-swimmers from 17 States participated in this event.

Shridhar Malagi and Swatik Patil won five medals, Simran Gaundalkar, Raghvendra R. Anvekar, Yogesh Patil, Aniket Pilankar, Shrikant Desai, Prajwal Y. Naralekar and Pruthvi Y. Naralekar won three medals, Rajesh Shinde, Sumit Mutagekar, Sahil Kajukar, Sharanya Kumbhar and Sahil R. Jadhav won two medals, and Amol Kamble, Mustaq Ahmed Syed and Jotiba Kundekar won one medal each.

They are members of swimmers club Belgaum and Aquarius swim club Belgaum and practiced at Suvarna JNMC Swimming Pool and Corporation Swimming Pool in Goaves. They have been trained by Umesh Kalghatgi, Prasad Tendolkar, Akshay Sheregar, Nitish Kuduchkar, Ajinkya Mendke and Govardhan Kakatkar.

** Winners Of Rajiv Gandhi Cup Football Tournament

The Tamil Nadu’s Women Police team and Bengaluru’s Austin Town team have emerged winners in Women and Men Division of the State-level Rajiv Gandhi Cup Football Tournament organised by Mysuru District Rural Youth Congress Committee at the Railway Grounds on Manandavadi Road here yesterday.

In the finals of the three-day tournament, the Tamil Nadu’s women defeated Bengaluru’s Modern Girls’ team 10-7 points. Mythri of Modern Girls team and Shravanya, goalkeeper of Tamil Nadu’s Women Police team, bagged the Best Performers award. National Youth Football players Simran Bhargav, Triya Menon and Indumati were felicitated on the occasion.
