** Exhibition of paintings inspired by Vaccine Depot

Gulmohar BAG (Belgaum Artists Group) will hold an exhibition of landscape paintings of Vaccine Depot at Kalamaharshi K. B. Kulkarni art gallery in Varerkar Natya Sangh in Tilakwadi in Belagavi from October 16 to 20.

As many as 22 members of the group will exhibit more than 50 artworks.

“The idea is to highlight the beauty of Vaccine Depot, which is a major lung space in Belagavi, and the need to preserve it. Citizens are concerned about the ongoing slaughter of trees in the name of development. Apart from being a lung space, Vaccine Depot is also a spot of inspiration for many artists to paint. We feel morally responsible for its upkeep and are highlight the cause in a creative way,” say the artists.

** K.P. Rao from Udupi given Balavana Award

Kinnikambala Padmanabha Rao, popularly known as K.P. Rao, from Udupi district, received the Balavana Award at Balavana in Puttur on Sunday. The award is given every year by the district administration on the occasion of the birth anniversary of Shivaram Karanth.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Rao said that it is the good understanding of linguistics that enabled Shivaram Karanth to come up with so many literary works. It is important for a writer to understand the strengths and weaknesses of a language, he added. Giving away the award, Puttur MLA Sanjeeva Matandoor said that the nation has made a lot of progress since the days of Shivaram Karanath. Mr. Rao is among the few luminaries who have greatly contributed towards the use of Kannada and other Indian languages in computers and smart phones. “It is really an honour for me to give the award to Mr. Rao,” he said.

** Mangaluru: Dr Kiran Kumar elected president of Indian Psychiatry Society Karnataka chapter

 Dr P K Kiran Kumar, professor and former head of the department of psychiatry, A J Institute of Medical Sciences here, has been elected president of Indian Psychiatry Society Karnataka chapter for the year 2021-22.

The election was held during KANCIPS-21, the annual conference of IPS-KC at Father Muller Medical College, Mangaluru.

According to researchers from Wildlife Institute of India and National Tiger Conservation Authority, the number of tigers in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh could in fact be the same as Uttarakhand.

** Lulu Hypermarket opens in Rajajinagar on Monday

The first Lulu Hypermarket opens at Global Malls, in Rajajinagar, on Monday. It is billed to be the biggest hypermarket in Bengaluru, with the largest indoor entertainment zone, Funtura.  

Launched by Lulu Group, the UAE multinational conglomerate, the mall is located on 14 acres, with 132 stores and 17 kiosks of retail brands across five storeys, spanning over 8 lakh sqft.

** Pushpavati Nayak and Preeti Kamat bag 9 gold medals each

451 medals, 81 cash awards given away by Karnatak varsity

Students of Mass Communication and Journalism Pushpavati Nayak and Preeti Kamat who have bagged nine gold medals each were presented the same at the 70th and 71st convocation of the Karnatak University held in Dharwad on Saturday.

While the convocation address was delivered virtually on Friday, the gold medal presentation programme was held offline on Saturday. Among the doctoral candidates, Laxmi Doddgoudar of the Department of Kannada Studies also secured nine gold medals.

Janhvi Joshi of the Chemistry Department, Shahin C. of the Zoology Department and Vijaykumar Kharoshi and Chandralekha V. of the Biochemistry Department secured eight gold medals each.

** ‘Largest’ residential rooftop solar power plant commissioned in Bengaluru

A rooftop solar power plant, touted as “the largest” for a residential apartment complex in the country, was inaugurated in the city on Saturday. Enphase Energy announced the installation of the 354.4KW plant over 13 residential high-rise buildings at the Brigade Gateway Apartment Complex here.

“This is the largest rooftop solar power plant for a residential apartment complex in India, that enables residents to save up to 69% of their present estimated consumption, while also helping save carbon emission of up to 530 tons annually,” a release said.
