** 16 achievers including Melvyn Rodrigues to be conferred Sandesha Awards

Sandesha Foundation trustee Roy Castelino announced the names of 16 achievers including a trust who will be awarded the annual Sandesha Awards.

Addressing media at a press meet, he said, “This year’s award programme shall be held on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 at 5.30 pm at Sandesha institute ground. Dr. Henry D’Souza, bishop of Bellary and chairman of the Institute shall preside over the function. Dr P Subrahmanya Yadapadithaya, vice chancellor of Mangalore University will be the chief guest. Shashi Kumar, IPS, commissioner of police, mangaluru will be the guest of honour. Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, bishop of Mangalore and Dr Gerald Isaac Lobo, bishop of Udupi, Fr Francis Assisi Almeida, director of Sandesha, Fr Ivan Pinto and Roy Castelino, the trustees of the institute shall be the guests.

“The 16 achievers who will be conferred with the awards are Baraguru Ramachandrappa, Amar Konkani, Dr Sunitha Shetty, Nagesh Hegde, Meena Rebimbus, Avithas Adalphus Cutinha (Dolla), Lakshman Saab Chauri, and Samarthanam Trust for the year 2021 and Rahmath Tarikere, Melvyn Rodrigues, B K Gangadar Kirodian, Dr T C Poornima, Alwyn Noronha, Kasaragod Chinna, Dr P K Rajashekar, and Sa R Raghunath for 2022.

“Valerian Rodrigues is the president of Sandesha Awards jury, and Dr B S Talwadi, Dr Na Da Shetty, Concepta Alva, Chandrakala Nandavar and Mohammed Baddur are part of the jury,” he said.

** Konkani Community of Israel holds ‘Nathalanso Dhabazo’

Konkani Community of Israel (KCI) has organized several programmes in Israel during the last five years with the basic intention of service through talents. Several needy people are supported. KCI held ‘Natalancho Dabazo’ programme in December 2021 to prepare for Christmas and to help the needy.

Fr Dominic Mendonca who led the Holy Mass that day gave away a meaningful homily about how one should live in an organization. In the hall programme that followed, KCI president Pravel D’Costa Katipalla, KCI coordinator Savita D’Souza, Fr Dominic Mendonca, KDCC president Sandeep Fernandes and Israel Galaxy Band master Prakash Fernandes released a Konkani devotional album titled ‘Rai Zalmala’. KCI well-wishers Benna D’ Souza and Alex D’Sa were present. A short programme was held to thank those who supported and others.

Meet Ramston Rodrigues, who beat international medalist from Czech Republic, Lucas Piffko in the IMMAF (International Mixed Martial Arts Federation) in the World Championship held from January 24-29 this year in Abu Dhabi.

** Kundapur: Farmer strikes gold in papaya cultivation

Atul Kumar Shetty from Jannadi here, who cultivates areca nut and coconut, is now grabbing the eyeballs  with his papaya cultivation. He hit on papaya cultivation after witnessing the rich growth of the fruit in shorter stems during his visit to the Agricultural Science Research Station, Brahmavar. He received cooperation and support from the Dharmasthala Rural Development Project. As papaya cultivation was new to this area, he received the supporting information and technical advice. 

He created an 18 inches canal in a level field near his house. He filled the trench with organic compounds.to the level of the land and planted 60 seeds of Taiwan 60 variety which he brought from Brahmavar Agricultural Science Research Station. His also being a dairy farmer came handy to him and he used the manure from the cattle shed.  The trees began yielding starting in the sixth month.

** Journalist-writer Bhimsen Toragal dead

Senior journalist and writer Bhimsen Toragal passed away at his residence in Belagavi on Monday due to age-related problems. He was 82.

As per his last wish, the cremation was held without following any of the Brahmin rituals.

He is survived by his wife, daughter and son.

Bhimsen Toragal had reportedly made his last wish clear to his family members and friends about two decades ago.

Bhimsen Toragal had established the eveninger Samatola in the 1980s. He had written a novel Sanchu analysing the Mahabharata episodes in his own way.

Known for his old school journalism and distinct style of writing, he was also was a pioneer in adapting technology. At a time when Marathi and Belagavi newspaperswere still using old printing technology and machines, Bhimsen Toragal had installed computer systems in his office.

** Photographer D.C. Nagesh passes away

Photo-journalist D.C. Nagesh, who specialised in Kannada films, passed away here on Saturday. He was ailing for sometime. Mr. Nagesh, who was 66, is survived by wife and a daughter.

Mr. Nagesh had been active since the early 1980s. He was in charge of the photo exhibition showcasing the work of guests of Belli Hejje programme which saw several stalwarts of the Kannada film industry interact with the audience. He was also known for the profiles of film personalities that he shot during his career.

Karnataka Renewable Energy Development Limited (KREDL) is taking up various initiatives for promoting research and development in the field of renewable energy and also for exploitation of renewable energy sources, Assistant General Manager (In-Charge) of KREDL Savita S. Meti has said.

Speaking at a media workshop and interaction on Renewable Energy Sources at Rayapur near Hubballi on Wednesday, Ms. Meti said that KREDL is making continuous efforts to exploit alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power, micro hydro power generation, bio power and generation of power using solid waste.

** Survey of monuments, antiquities to cover all taluks in Karnataka

Thirteen taluks to be surveyed this year

The Department of Archaeology, Museums and Heritage has launched a major survey to update the inventory of cultural properties and monuments strewn across Karnataka. Given the scope of the survey and the magnitude of the work involved, the project will be taken up in a phased manner and 13 taluks will be covered this year. This is in addition to five taluks already surveyed.

Karnataka has a treasure-trove of historical monuments and structures of which 844 are of State importance and declared as “protected” under the Karnataka Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act, 1961. In addition, there are 609 centrally protected monuments of national importance under the jurisdiction of Archaeological Survey of India.
