** Mysore varsity faculty bags national award

Mohan C.D., a faculty at the University of Mysore, has been chosen for Prof. H.S. Srivastava (PHSS) Foundation-Young Scientist (Life Sciences, Environmental Sciences and Agriculture Sciences) award for the year 2020-21.

He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Studies in Molecular Biology on the Manasagangotri campus. He works under the supervision of K.S. Rangappa, former Vice-Chancellor, University of Mysore, on the discovery of small molecule modulators of cancer cell death.

He had recently received the NASI-Platinum Jubilee Young Scientist Award from the National Academy of Sciences, India, a release said here.

Eleven twins are students of Sharada Ganapati Vidya Kendra, Punyakoti Nagar in Kairangala village. Kairangala village is located on Kerala-Karnataka border in Bantwal taluk.

The school boasts of three pairs of twins in fourth standard, two in fifth standard, and one each in sixth, seventh, eighth and tenth standards. There are two twins in the second PU class. Out of these twins, four are made of girls, four twins are made up of boys while the remaining twins are of one boy and one girl.

** Dream museum of art and coins

Numismatist, poet, writer and playwright, Dr Upadhya has set up Kalakashi, which houses coins and other art sculptures which bring history alive .

It is an art collection that can leave one mesmerised — a museum of big pictures of coins from the 5th century till date. Each room has photographs of coins, ranging from paisas and annas to Rs 10,000 currency note. 

Called ‘Kalakashi’, it is built over four acres of land, just 8km from Ron town in Gadag district, with 11 big halls showcasing over 5,000 coins in 3D format. Each coin is exhibited in a 3”x 5” frame and clearly shows all details.

There is also a replica of  Mysore Palace (under construction) and lifesize sculptures of a farmer, cart, gorilla and many more.

Akarsh honoured for commitment to welfare of orphans

Akarsh Shroff, 21, of Bengaluru and a student of BITS Pilani was conferred the United Nations V-award for his commitment to the welfare of orphans and underserved children.

V-Awards is an initiative by the UN Volunteers India which aims to celebrate 10 extraordinary young people under the age of 30 who work to change the lives of communities around them through their acts of volunteerism.

YuvaSpark, Bengaluru-based NGO co-founded by Akarsh, has impacted more than 82,000 people across eight districts in three States of India through its education and COVID-19 relief programmes.

Ramadevi B., mother of Vamsi Krishna V. (autism spectrum disorder and intellectual disability), was conferred with the Best Mother of the Year-2021 award in recognition of her hard work for the development of her child.

Among the achievers who were felicitated on the occasion include Karthik B.K., a person with cleft lip and palate, completed diploma in electronics and communication from a polytechnic college here; and currently working as technical lead in Happy Minds Company, Mysuru; Asna T.P, a person with hearing impairment, completed her Bachelor’s in Architecture from Government Engineering College, Kerala with a first class, and currently working as an architect and designer in Thrissur; and Annushaka Bhattacharjee, a person with autism spectrum disorder, completed her 10th standard through National Open Schooling, and working as an assistant teacher at Nireekshe Special School here.

** Veteran actor Shivaram passes away

Shivaram was associated with the film industry since the late fifties first as an associate director and later as a character actor and producer.

He made his debut as an actor in Beretha Jeeva (1965). Some of his memorable roles were in films of director Puttanna Kanagal, and with matinee idol Rajkumar.

** Kannada learning too goes online with 20-minute modules

For those looking to learn speaking and writing Kannada, help is at hand.

The Kannada Development Authority has come up with 20-minute modules called ‘Kannada Nudi Kalike Paata’ to reach out to non-Kannadigas and also to those who want to learn the language anywhere across the globe.

The language will be taught using English for transliteration so that people can understand and pronounce better.
