** Kanaka Murthy passes away

Renowned sculptor Kanaka Murthy, known to be the first woman sculptor of the State, succumbed to COVID-19 on Thursday.

Born in 1942 in T. Narasipura, Mysuru, she was mesmerised by the sculptures at a temple in Mysuru in 1965 and took up sculpting as a passion, something rare for a woman in those times. She learnt sculpture from Devalakunda Vadiraj and emerged as a leading sculptor of her times.

Health and Medical Education Minister K. Sudhakar reviewed ongoing efforts at Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), which is developing a vaccine for COVID-19, and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) that has developed a drug that prevents viral growth and a better oxygen management system. He hailed them as “game changers in the fight against COVID-19”.

Dr. Sudhakar visited DRDO facilities in the city on Friday where scientists appraised him of progress on 2-deoxy-D-glucose (2-DG) drug they are developing in collaboration with Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories (DRL), Hyderabad. “Clinical trial results have shown that this molecule helps in faster recovery of hospitalised patients and reduces supplemental oxygen dependence,” DRDO scientists said.

He was also apprised of the OxyCare system, an intelligent oxygen management system that reduces exposure of healthcare providers by eliminating manual adjustments to oxygen flow. The PM-CARES Fund will procure 1.5 lakh units of Oxycare System at a cost of ₹322.5 crore. It will be deployed across the country, DRDO scientists said.

** Residents welfare group to offer free car ride, ambulance service in Bengaluru amid pandemic

Speaking to The New Indian Express, Abdul Aleem, president of ‘Changemakers of Kanakapura Road’ said, “With COVID cases rising, we want to help out the nearly 30,000 residents who are our members. We facilitated arrangement of an Innova car through Sathya Sai Tourist service. Our group will bear the diesel and driver charges.”

** Jayatheerth Kagalkar passes away

Jayatheerth Kagalkar, senior journalist and resident editor of Samyukta Karnataka, Kalaburagi edition, died of COVID-19 on Thursday. He was 53.

He served as a reporter at Samuykta Karnataka for the last three decades and was recently promoted as resident editor. He is survived by his wife and two daughters.

His father Venkat Rao N. Kagalkar was also a reporter and served as correspondent for The Hindu for three decades.

** Mandya gets 40 mobile oxygen concentrators

Mobile oxygen concentrators have come as a relief in the treatment of COVID-19 patients in Mandya, particularly in taluks and rural pockets where the cases have seen a spike.

Mandya is among the districts in the State that are reporting over four-digit cases since many days with sharp rise in positivity rate and the case fatality rate.

On an appeal to the State COVID-19 Task Force, Mandya got 40 mobile oxygen concentrators, which are now being used across the district for treating patients based on their case status.

** BLDE varsity V-C passes away

Mallanagouda S Biradar, Vice-Chancellor of the Vijayapura-based BLDE deemed to be university, died of COVID-19-related complications in a private hospital in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

Dr. Biradar was recovering from COVID-19 when he suffered a heart attack at his house. He was airlifted to Bengaluru two days ago. But he suffered another heart attack before admission.
