** Indian environmental scientist elected to U.S. National Academy of Sciences

Conservation biologist Kamal Bawa has been elected to the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Kamal Bawa is president of the Bengaluru-based Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and Environment (ATREE) as well as an elected fellow of the Royal Society (London) and the American Philosophical Society.

“The election is a reaffirmation of our important work on the ecology, conservation, and management of tropical forests that are declining all over the world but are critical to humanity’s well-being,” said Dr. Bawa.

A few years ago, Dr. Bawa brought together scientists from India’s leading institutions to develop the National Mission on Biodiversity and Human Wellbeing under the banner of the Biodiversity Collaborative. The effort was supported by the office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, and is currently funded by the Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies.

** Karnataka: Now, citizens can survey land on their own

A survey becomes necessary when a plot has multiple owners and the boundaries need to be determined.

In what promises to be a major reform, Karnataka has issued an order allowing citizens to survey their lands on their own without having to wait for a licensed or government-employed surveyor.

According to an order issued by the Revenue Department, private lands can be surveyed and sketched by citizens themselves using the Swavalambi app.

The self-survey facility will be available for lands under single, multiple and joint ownership.

** Special cover and Corporate My Stamp of Dr. Ramaiah released

India Post on Friday released a special cover and Corporate My Stamp of educationist, philanthropist and industrialist Dr. M.S. Ramaiah. The special cover will be available for sale at Philatelic Bureaus of Bengaluru GPO, Mangaluru HO, Mysuru HO and Belagavi HO, and also at e-Post Office, stated a press release. 

The late Dr. Ramaiah’s son M.R Seetharam, vice-chairman of Gokula Education Foundation, said “I thank the postal department for this special honour. He is always an inspiration to our family and many others.” Dr. M.R. Jayaram, Chairman of Gokula Education Foundation and Mr. L.K. Bengaluru-based cornea-refractive surgeon and translational scientist Rohit Shetty has been named as one of the Top 100 most inspiring and influential ophthalmologists of the world by The Ophthalmologist magazine. Dr Shetty is the first Kannadiga to make it to the ‘power list’.

The Ophthalmologist Power List 2022 is a roll call of achievers in clinical practice and vision research. The list is prepared from a lineup of 450 names by an international panel of 20 judges.

** ‘Nadoja’ Awards Conferred

Noted writer and linguist Prof. T.V. Venkatachala Sastry, folk scholar Go.Ru. Channabasappa and Sanskrit scholar Prof. Bhashyam Swamiji of Sri Yoganarasimhaswamy Temple-Mysuru, who were conferred with ‘Nadoja’ award at the 30th Convocation of Hampi Kannada University yesterday.

Scribes who got three books related to complete history of Shashakapura Hoysals, went on to do research on the last days of Hoysala king Vishnuvardhana.

Old Shashakapura and now called Angadi village in Mudigere taluk was the origin of Historically famed Hoysala dynasty. Fourth king of Hoysala dynasty Vishnuvardhana was most famous and his grave has been discovered just outside Mudigere town.

** Bosch signs MoU with JSS STU for courses on cyber security

Bosch Global Software Technologies (BGSW) recently signed an MoU with JSS Science and Technology University (STU) to start an industry elective course on Cyber Security and Industry 4.0.

BGSW is a 100 per cent owned subsidiary of Robert Bosch GmbH. It is one of the world’s leading global suppliers of technology and services, offering end-to-end Engineering, IT, and Business Solutions, a release from JSS STU said.

Courses offered by industries will give a lot of practical exposure to students and will help universities to implement and teach the latest technologies. JSS STU is the first university in India to have collaborated with Bosch for cyber security courses, it said

** Bengaluru tops in financial cover in tier 1, 2 cities 

According to a survey released by Max Life Insurance and Kantar, Bengaluru has topped the charts as the most financially protected city in India.

The survey, titled ‘The India Protection Quotient 4.0’, had 5,729 respondents from 25 cities in India.

Bengaluru had a protection quotient of 56 per cent, the same as Delhi. Compared to other metropolitan and Tier-1 cities, Bengaluru has the highest percentage of life insurance ownership, at 91 per cent. However, the city ranked lowest in terms of financial security, with 53 per cent.
