** Sharnbasva University Vice-Chancellor made NCC’s honorary colonel

Col. Sandeep Jagtap, Commanding Officer, 32 Karnataka Battalion of National Cadet Corps (NCC), and Col. Sushil Kumar Tiwari (retd.) conferred the position of honorary colonel on Niranjan V. Nisty, Vice-Chancellor of Sharnbasva University, Kalaburagi, in Kalaburagi on Saturday.

Dr. Nisty was the seniormost, among the 11 select Vice-Chancellors in the country who were conferred with the position in their respective NCC battalions. These VCs will also be the Colonel Commandant of the NCC units in their respective universities.

Col. Tiwari said that the achievement of Dr. Nisty, a medical professional, proved that people from different professions too could achieve the honours conferred by the Defence Ministry. 

** ISRO to train 150 students in science, tech

In order to “catch them young”, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will be selecting 150 students from Class 9 across India to take part in a special two-week programme.

Titled YUVIKA (Yuva Vigyani Karyakram), ISRO will host the students at five of their centres based in Bengaluru, Thiruvananthapuram, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad and Shillong and will take them on a tour to Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota. 

** Kundapur: Unique smart classroom in modified KSRTC bus inaugurated

 A unique smart classroom was inaugurated by the government higher primary school Noojadi, Bagwadi in a KSRTC bus here on Saturday March 12.

MLA B M Sukumar Shetty who inaugurated the class said that basic facilities are being provided in the rural schools. “The country can change only when even the last child in the society gets educated. Students who study in hardship reach high positions in their career. No child should be deprived of education.

“Students will benefit as KSRTC runs their buses on rural roads. Officials should make sure that the buses run in villages where there is demand. They should have a service mentality instead of being only profit minded considering the student’s future. Students will gherao Kundapur KSRTC depot if KSRTC does not run their buses in the rural area from next academic year,” he said

** Mangaluru: St Joseph Engineering College students secure 3 ranks at university level

Continuing the tradition of bagging university ranks, the students of St Joseph Engineering College (SJEC) in city have brought laurels to the college yet again, by securing three rRanks in the University Examinations conducted by Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Belagavi, for the academic year 2020-21.

Sheik Mohammad Zunain secured the fourth rank in Civil Engineering by scoring a CGPA of 9.46 in his Bachelor of Engineering studies. Alongside him, Varun M, secured ninth rank in Mechanical Engineering with a CGPA of 9.35.

In the Postgraduate category, Sushmitha secured the eighth rank in Master of Computer Applications (MCA) by scoring a CGPA of 9.18.

The meritorious students will be awarded their degrees by Thawar Chand Gehlot, governor of Karnataka and the chancellor of the University, during the 21st Annual Convocation of the VTU to be held at Belagavi

** MoU inked with British Council to impart global skills to youth in Karnataka

he Government of Karnataka and the British Council signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Friday to renew their partnership in the areas of education, English, and arts aimed at creating global opportunities for the youth of Karnataka, stated a press release. 

It also paves the way to develop sustainable partnerships in research and innovation between centers of excellence (CoE) in the UK and Karnataka across areas of artificial intelligence, machine learning, ed-tech, biosciences, and cybersecurity, said Minister of Higher Education Ashwath Narayan. The MoU, which is for the duration of three years, was signed at Vikasa Soudha.

** VVCE bags 3 ranks in VTU exams

Three students of  Vidyavardhaka College of Engineering have bagged ranks in the examinations conducted recently by the Visvesvaraiah Technological University (VTU).

A release said Sai Sree Reena Reddy of Department of Information Science and Engineering secured fourth rank; Sonia Das of Department of Computer Science and Engineering of M. Tech also secured fourth rank; and Mrudula Chandrakar of Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering secured tenth rank

There is still a huge gender disparity in workspaces

There has been a persistent issue of underrepresentation of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) jobs despite calls for increasing their representation in the workforce.

“While it is true that STEM fields need more gender diversity, I would like to acknowledge the intentionality and focus needed to address this complex problem. Over the years, I’ve learnt to use my voice effectively, listen intently to diverse perspectives, and be willing to change my approaches to drive the best outcomes. I learnt to rely on my support system and actively seek feedback on how I need to show up differently,” says Charu Srinivasan, VP of Engineering leading the India Development Centre development team for all of Compute and Cloud Native technologies.
