** KUWJ polls: All members elected unopposed

Dilip Kurundawade was elected president of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists, Belagavi unit, on Saturday.

Rajshekar Patil, Yallappa Talwar, and Shreeshail Mathad were elected vice presidents while Arun Patil was made general secretary, Srikant Kubagaddi, Tanajirao Murumkar and Eshwar Hoti made secretaries, and Chetan Holeppagol, treasurer.

Mallikarjun Gondi was elected State executive committee member. As many as 15 members were elected. The election of all office-bearers was unanimous, said a release by G.K. Pujar, election officer.

** Mangaluru: INTACH organises ‘Nurturers of the Cherry Garden’

Mangaluru Chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) is organizing an exhibition of rare vintage photographs of the journey of cricket in Mangaluru from the collection of Kasturi Balakrishna Pai, former cricket umpire of Mangaluru region.

The exhibition organised under the title ‘Nurturers of the Cherry Garden’ will open on 19th February, 2022 at 05:30 pm at Kodialguthu Center for Art and Culture, GG Road, BallalBagh, Mangalore and the display will remain open to visitors till February 23, between 11 am and 7 pm.

The exhibition will be inaugurated by K Vishnu Shenoy, a member of the first team of Mangalorean cricketers which went to Mysuru and Bengaluru in 1957 in the presence of Basty Purushotham Shenoy, former captain of KREC (NITK) cricket team.

** Dubai: Dayan D’Souza’s book of inspiring essays ‘Jinnie Sotam’ released

‘Jinnie Sotam,’ a collection of essays by Dayan D’Souza Mukamar was released during the recent Daiji Dubai Anniversary celebration held at Airport Millenium Hotel Dubai.

The book was released by Daijiworld Media CEO and MD Walter Nandalike along with writer Irshad Moodbidri, Nanu Marol Thottam, Rajesh D’Souza, Lavina D’Souza in the presence of Dayan D’Souza Mukamar.

Addressing the gathering after releasing the book, Walter Nandalike lauded Dayan and said, “Dayan D’Souza Mukamar’s thoughts and talks are an inspiration to all of us. He is skilled in explaining complex topics in very simple words while spicing it with humour in his very own unique style. All the essays in this book are his own life experiences in different situations and periods which he has shared with us.

** Juice of kindness: Dharwad man’s way of paying back to society

Quenching the thirst of visually challenged people and offering them juice free of cost is this juice shop owner’s small and well-intended gesture to give back to society.

Krishna Nayak, who runs his juice centre on University Road in Kalyan Nagar of Dharwad, says he was inspired by visually challenged Hindustani and Carnatic vocalist, late Puttaraj Gawai. A proponent of Gwalior Gharana, Gawai had set up a theatre company to raise funds to provide free food, shelter and education to differently-abled orphans.

** Abu Dhabi: Konkani Cultural Organisation poll – Jason Correa elected president

Jason Correa hailing from Milagres Kallianpur has been elected the president of Abu Dhabi’s Konkani Cultural Organization. The election was held during the annual general body meeting that took place at Nihal Hotel Abu Dhabi on the February 16.

Jason has been working in the UAE since 2007 and has been a member of the Organization from 2014. In the past he has worked in the roles of assistant general secretary and media coordinator in the previous committees. He was also a member of the KCO silver jubilee committee for the year 2020-21.

** Get your binoculars, the Great Backyard Bird Count begins today

Last year, over 360 species of birds were recorded in Karnataka

Starting Friday, hundreds of bird watchers from Bengaluru and across India, equipped with their binoculars and cameras, will document birds in their neighbourhoods and cities till February 21.

The four-day event is part of the Great Backyard Bird Count (GBBC), an annual avian census that marks the whereabouts of millions of birds.

** Daiji Dubai at 22: Lifetime Achievement Award for Eric Ozario, Literary for Clarence

 It was a day to remember for the group of Konkani writers who had initiated the forum called ‘Daiji Dubai’ back in 1999 with the intention of promoting Konkani language, culture and art. Founded under the leadership of Dayan D’Souza Mukamar with the support of four others, Walter Nandalike, founder of Daijiworld, Stany Nirude, Hemacharya (Stephan Mascarenhas), and Melvyn Rodrigues, today the forum consists of more than three dozen Konkani writers who reside in the UAE.

The 22nd anniversary celebration was organised at the Millennium Airport Hotel Dubai, Al Garoud ball room on Sunday February 13 from 11 am to 4:30 pm. The programme started with releasing of new title song of Daiji Dubai. Founder member Walter Nandalike released the song in the presence of other founder members and past and current convenors of Daiji Dubai. The song was originally written by Robert Fernandes Udyavar and Rony D’Cunha, and modified by Glany Fernandes by visually covering the journey of Daiji Dubai from last 21 years and beautifully sung by Vinay Lewis, Sabitha Mathias, Lydwin Cutinho, Zeena Pinto, Jeevan Vas and Anil Rodrigues for the wonderful music of Adrian Gomes.

** Bengaluru singer spends three years paying homage to Pulwama martyrs

Umesh Gopinath Jadhav, a city-based singer, spent three years traveling to the houses of the martyrs who lost their lives in the terror attacks in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama in 2019.

Mr. Jadhav met the families of 40 jawans and collected soil from outside their homes for a memorial.

** Noted film personality Bhargavi Narayan passes away

Film, theatre and small screen artiste Bhargavi Narayan passed away on Monday night at 83. She was suffering from age-related ailments.

Bhargavi had acted in several films, including  Eradu Kanasu, Hanthakana Sanchu, Pallavi Anupallavi, Vamshavriksha, Professor Hucchuraya and  Baa Nalle Madhuchandrake. She had acted in several popular teleserials such as  Mukta. She had acted in scores of plays and was active as radio play artiste as well.
