** HCL, Applied Material, others to invest ₹5,000 crore in Karnataka

Tech firm HCL already has a significant presence in Bengaluru. U.S-based Applied Materials, Inc. supplies equipment, services and software for the manufacture of semiconductor (integrated circuit) chips for electronics, flat panel displays for computers, smartphones, televisions, and solar products. Rakon India is an electronic manufacturer while Noida-based Chint Electric makes isolator switches.

 A passion for singing, acting and forensic science — Bengaluru-based general physician Dr Leela Mohan was disapproved of by his family for all these interests. However, Mohan was quite confident of juggling his passion and profession by applying a simple ingredient to his life, experimentation. What came as dejections turned out to be an opportunity, leading upto moments where Mohan is right now — a short film producer, actor, and doctor specialising in general medicine. 

** Veep felicitates PES varsity prof who guided students to develop satellites

Vice-President Venkaiah Naidu felicitated Dr Sambasiva Rao, a professor at PES University, for the launch of a micro-satellite earlier this year.

 Dr Sambasiva Rao had mentored a team of students, who successfully launched two micro-satellites, the latest of which went up this February.

The satellite was conceptualised and developed by students and was launched with the support of the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). “That PES University is the second university in the country after IIT Bombay to achieve this spectacular feat speaks of their prowess in cutting-edge technology,” said Naidu.

** Highlight on heritage: New book on Hampi aims to demystify stories around the historical site

This new book on Hampi, by an Indo-French couple, aims to shed light on north Karnataka’s architectural marvels.

It was in 1960 that Vasundhara Kavali Filliozat visited Hampi as a student of Karnataka University, Dharwad, as part of a study tour. Little did she know that Hampi would turn out to be her ‘first love’ and in turn a window of opportunity to explore the genesis of the Vijayanagara empire. Or as the historian claims the Karnataka Samrajya (empire). 

Filliozat will be releasing her new book titled Hampi on November 15, as part of the Karnataka Rajyotsava celebrations through the month. Co-authored by her husband, Pierre-Sylvain Filliozat, the book chronicles the history of the ‘Karnataka Samrajya’ from the early 12th century.

Technology services firm ITC Infotech and Harvard Business School (HBS) have jointly developed a Work from Anywhere (I – WFA) productivity framework, which was unveiled on November 11.

I – WFA enables digital, distributed, flexible, outcome driven and secure future work scenario for clients and employees. It powers a distributed workplace and decentralised workforce.

From HBS, Lumry Family Associate Professor Prithwiraj Choudhury collaborated with the Indian tech company to build the data backed and succinct framework.
