** IISc develops device to improve data encryption

‘This will provide better protection for digital data such as credit card details, passwords etc.’

A team at the Department of Electrical Communication Engineering (ECE), Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has developed a true random number generator (TRNG), which, the team says, can improve data encryption and provide improved security for sensitive digital data such as credit card details, passwords and other personal information. The study describing the device has been published in the journal ACS Nano.

“Almost everything we do on the internet is encrypted for security. The strength of this encryption depends on the quality of random number generation,” explained Nithin Abraham, a PhD student who is a part of a team led by Kausik Majumdar, Associate Professor at ECE, which has developed the device.

** Mangaluru: Three-day Indian Open of Surfing to begin on May 27

A three-day Indian Open of Surfing (national surfing championship 2022) will begin from May 27 to 29 at Panambur beach, informed deputy commissioner Dr K V Rajendra.

The event is organized by the state tourism department, Surfing Federation of India and Mantra surfing. The tourism department has funded Rs 15 lac for the event. More than 75 top surfers of India are expected to take part, while 70 surfers have confirmed their participation.

Surfing and stand up paddling across different categories which are male open, female open and male and female (U16). The preparation work has commenced to beautify the beach prior to the event.

** UK-based IoA offers to train 1,000 engineering college students in analytics and data sciences

The Institute of Analytics (IoA), an UK-based not-for-profit organisation for analytics and data science professionals, has come forward to offer a programme for 1,000 engineering graduates from government colleges of Karnataka. This is in addition to a fully-funded data literacy programme for schoolchildren.

Clare Walsh FIoA – Head of Education, and Rosie Sweeney, Head of Memberships from IoA, met C.N. Ashwath Narayan, Minister for Higher Education, on the sidelines of the World Education Forum summit in London and made such a proposal.

According to a communique from the Minister’s office, they said that the programme for select engineering graduates will be undertaken in association with the International Skill Development Corporation (ISDC).

Dr. Clare has also proposed to provide IoA membership to 100 government employees working in the Department of Information Technology. In this regard, an exclusive programme on data literacy among the government employees will be executed to help them improve their analytics skills, she said.

** Film made in Bengaluru goes to Cannes

Bengaluru-based Shruthi Raju, a first-time filmmaker, will be among the Indians participating in the 75th annual Cannes Film Festival in southern France. Her short film What’s Up With Indian Men? will be shown in Cannes Court Metrage online Video Library on May 25 during the festival.

The 15-minute film, mostly in English, is a lighthearted social satire that looks at different generations of men through a woman’s eyes.

After working on more than 120 original theatre shows across south India under the banner of Underdog Entertainment, which she co-founded, Shruthi recently ventured into films. The short film is adapted from a play she wrote and acted in.

** Mangaluru: Ekalavya awardee, international Kabaddi player Uday Chowta dies at 43

International Kabaddi player and Bank of Baroda official Maani-Badigudde Uday Chowta passed away here in the early hours Saturday, May 21.

Preliminary reports from his close sources said that the 43-year-old sports persona suffered a brain hemorrhage. It is said that he had been unwell for sometime.

Uday Chowta was the recipient of the prestigious Ekalavya award instituted by the government of Karnataka apart from several state and district accolades. Uday Chowta had represented the Indian Kabaddi team which won the second World Kabaddi Championship in 2007.

** Kannada in Canadian Parliament

Canadian parliamentarian Chandrakanth Arya spoke in Kannada in the House

Canadian parliamentarian Chandrakanth Arya, hailing from Sira in Tumakuru district, spoke in the country’s parliament in Kannada and posted a video on Twitter on Friday, earning praise in his home State.

Mr. Arya was elected as an MP for Nepean, Ontario, in 2015 and was re-elected in 2019. He made a brief statement in Kannada saying him speaking in Kannada would make the people of Karnataka happy and proud. He said Canadian Kannadigas had celebrated Kannada Rajyotsava in Parliament in 2018 and now he was speaking in Kannada.

He signed off with the lines of a Kuvempu poem: “Elladaru Iru, Enthadaru Iru…Endendigu Nee Kannadavagiru’‘ (Wherever you are, However you are…always be Kannadiga).

The concept is the brainchild of Nathaniel Gaskell, founder and director of the MAP Academy.

“The premise of our encyclopedia and online courses is simple — to make the art histories of South Asia more accessible, based on the belief that doing so can have a positive social impact,” says Gaskell.

** Mangaluru: Karnataka tops country in FDI inflow, says Nirani

Minister of Large & Medium Industries, Murugesh Nirani said the state is ranked number 1 in the country in attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) inflows.

Addressing a press meet at the TMA Pai convention hall, Nirani said, “Various companies are flocking to Karnataka with mega projects. For the past one year, Karnataka has been at the top position in attracting FDIs. Nearly, 42% of FDI into the country is from Karnataka. In the IT-BT sector, Karnataka is in the number one position. Karnataka is the silicon valley of India.”

For the first time in the country, he said Karnataka has introduced a policy for semiconductor companies. Under this, he said we have cleared three projects which would come in three locations. One project is coming up in Mysuru involving an investment of Rs 22,500 crore, he said.

He also said that the government is giving importance to EV vehicles and Ethanol fuel extracted from different raw materials. “In 2020-21, we have produced 12% ethanol in the country. In 2022-23, we would like to touch 20%. The Centre is providing an interest subsidy of up to 6%. The Union government is supporting in increasing the GDP of the country. It is providing financial assistance for the various sectors for instance Bulk Drug Park. This would come up in three places in the country. Already, we have reserved 3000 hectares of land in Kadechur, Raichur. Almost 80 drug industries are all set to invest in this place. The Union government will release Rs 1000 crore for the project,” he said.

** Mangaluru: KMC Hospital treats 10-year-old patient with first-of-its-kind surgery in India

KMC Hospital has successfully performed a dentofacial deformity procedure correction caused by TMJ Ankylosis via Total temporo mandibular joint replacement on a 10-year-old patient. Philip (name changed) had a previous history of multiple surgeries following diagnosis of ankylosis with various modalities. For the child, the medical condition had started 10 days postnatal in the form of a parotid abscess and had progressed to the current condition of ankylosis.

The full spectrum of treatment by way of multiple surgeries involved the use of ribs to promote growth in the lower jaw, creating a gap after the removal of bone at the level of joint and interposing muscle to prevent refusion. In addition to the above maneuvres, the child was also subjected to the principles of bone lengthening using distraction osteogenesis, which stems from the principles of orthopaedics by Ilizarov.

** Asia Cup hockey: Hassan boy to represent India

Sheshe Gowda B.M., a hockey player from Hassan, has been selected to represent India in the upcoming Asia Cup tourney to be held in Jakarta in Indonesia between May 23 and June 1. He is said to be the first hockey player from Hassan to get a chance to represent the country.

Sheshe Gowda participated in senior national hockey championships and won gold in 2017, 2019, bronze in 2018 and silver in 2021. He also won gold in the all-India university tourney in 2014. Before that, he won bronze in the 2011 national championship (under 17). For the first time, he is taking part in an international event.

“Now I have got an opportunity to represent the country in an international tourney. I am happy for getting selected”, Sheshe Gowda told The Hindu over phone. Right now, he is attending a training camp in Bengaluru. Two other players from Karnataka selected to take part in the Asia Cup tourney are S.V. Sunil and Abaran Sudev. Both are from Kodagu.
