** Bengaluru gets largest Miyawaki forest

“The project started in November 2018 and now the saplings stand tall and dense. The area will be with us till January 2023 after which it will be handed over to the Railways.

The 4.75 acres of Miyawaki forest created on Indian Railway Institute of Disaster Management land in Hejjalla, Mysuru Road, is the largest man-made forest in Bengaluru, according to Say Trees, an NGO group. The area is covered with 60 native species in four layers — trees, sub-trees, canopy and shrubs.

** Krithi Karanth becomes first Asian woman to win WILD Innovators Award for her work in understanding human-animal conflict

For her efforts, Krithi was awarded the WILD Innovators Award, the first for an Asian woman on April 27, 2021.

This award is bestowed by the WILD ELEMENTS Foundation that brings together innovators, advocates and partners to identify solutions for conservation.

The foundation partners with premier science and conservation experts across the world and also with celebrities and influencers who promote interdependence.

According to the citation, Krithi was given the award for researching human dimensions in wildlife for over 20 years.

** NMPT receives 40 tonnes of liquid medical oxygen from Bahrain

The Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Mansukh Laxmanbhai Mandaviya, said on Wednesday that New Mangalore Port has received Indian Navy’s INS Talwar carrying 40 tonnes of liquid medical oxygen filled in cryogenic containers donated by the Kingdom of Bahrain.

“The New Mangalore Port is handling the oxygen cargo on priority basis,” he tweeted.

** Remdesivir to be manufactured in Belagavi district

A Belagavi-based pharmaceutical company has obtained licence to manufacture COVID-19 drug, Remdesivir injection.

Shree Anand Life Sciences, which has plants in Belagavi and Mudhol, will manufacture the injection that is in scarce supply.

Satish Ghargi, who hails from Bagalkot district, has set up Shree Anand Life Sciences pharmaceutical industry in Mudhol and Belagavi. The Belagavi plant is in Honaga Industrial Area.

** Manipal Hospitals completes acquisition of Columbia Asia

Manipal Hospitals on Friday completed the acquisition of Columbia Asia hospitals in a ₹2,100 crore deal.

The acquisition makes Manipal Hospitals the country’s second largest multi-specialty hospital chain, as per a statement.

** Japan to confer Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays decoration to Bengaluru teacher

Bengaluru teacher Shyamala Ganesh, the former director of the Japanese Language School, will be conferred the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays.

In a press release, Consulate-General of Japan, Bengaluru highlighted Ms. Ganesh’s contribution to the spread of the Japanese language and culture in Karnataka.

** DRDO to aid hospitals generate oxygen on site

The Medical Oxygen Plant (MOP) technology, developed by DRDO for on-board oxygen generation in the Light Combat Aircraft Tejas by DRDO’s Bengaluru-based Defence Bioengineering and Electromedical Laboratory (DEBEL), will now be employed in the fight against the current crisis of oxygen for Covid-19 patients.

The same technology generates oxygen for fighter pilots flying the Tejas at high altitudes.
