** Hunsur Boy Selected For Khelo India University Games

A boy from Hunsur Taluk studying in SDMC College, Ujire, has excelled in various Volleyball tournaments and has been selected for Khelo India University Tournament which will be held in Bengaluru in March this year.

He is Mahesh Kumar, son of Raitha Sangha District President Hosuru Krishnakumar and Mamata, who are residents of Maruthi Layout in Hunsur Taluk.

He has a list of achievements to his credit — Mahesh has played for Mangalore University Volleyball team which had participated in All India Inter-University Volleyball Tournament that was held at Odisha from Jan. 4 to Jan. 7. His team secured runner-up spot among 32 teams which had participated.

** Wins Gold In Kickboxing

Bolthura Roshani Muthanna of Karnataka Kickboxing Sports Association (WAKOIND-KA) has won a Gold Medal in the Cadets and Junior National Championship organised by WAKO India Kickboxing Federation, recognised by Ministry of Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India and Member, World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO), at Boxing Hall, Shri Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi, Mahalunge, Pune, Maharashtra, between Dec. 21 and 25. She secured first place in the 3 KL 027 J F – 65 KG category.

Roshani, daughter of late B.G. Muthanna (ex-Army) and Vishalakshi and a resident of Hootagalli SRS, is studying in PUC at Mahajana PU College. She is trained under Sudhakar and Abhishek of GTK Club.

** BEL to supply IoT devices to US firm

Defence PSU Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) and Hyperion Global Group, an infrastructure telecommunication distribution company, have entered into a contract to develop, manufacture and supply Internet of Things (IoT) devices for the US market.

As per the contract, BEL will manufacture and supply IoT devices worth US $73 million to Hyperion, based in the US, during the first year of commencement of supply, with a provision to negotiate and supply upgrades of the products, worth US $365 million, in the next five years, said a statement issued by BEL.

During his college days, 35-year-old Coast Guard Deputy Commandant H.T. Manjunath missed an opportunity to take part in the Republic Day parade. On January 26, Mr. Manjunath, who hails from Kundapura in Udupi district, got the opportunity to lead the Coast Guard contingent in the Republic Day parade at Rajpath in New Delhi.

“It’s an honour to lead our 96-member contingent. It’s a good opportunity, and I really aspired for this role,” Mr. Manjunath, who has been part of the Indian Coast Guard for 11 years, told The Hindu on phone.

Butterflies are excellent communities to monitor the ecological health of a place. A team of researchers from Mangalore University, in collaboration with other two institutes, has identified and documented 43,118 butterflies (individuals) belonging to 175 species in Dakshina Kannada.

Of them, 22 species were habitat specific. The researchers were pursuing the ‘winged beauties’ for the past two years
