** 10th century stone inscription found near Shravanabelagola

A 10th century inscription was found in Nagayyanakoppalu village near famous Jain pilgrimage town Shravanabelagola in Hassan district on Tuesday.

The inscription has old Kannada literature on it and was found while cultivation. Officials of archeology department visited the spot and are likely to shift the rock to one of the museums where historical monuments and sculptures are preserved.

According to Dr S Dinesh, a researcher and lecturer of SN PU College, the inscription has information about Jainism and ruler Chandragupta of the Maurya dynasty. The first Kannada inscription was found in Halmidi village of Belur taluk of Hassan district.

** 13th-century inscription stone lies neglected on Doddanekundi roadside

While the government is actively working on establishing new museums and restoring heritage sites under Mission 2022, a 13th century stone, with inscriptions on both sides, lies ignored in Doddanekundi. Locals and heritage enthusiasts have been striving for the last eight years to protect the stone, but nothing has happened so far. Agitated over the neglect, they have taken to social media to voice their wrath.

“Belonging to the Hoysala dynasty, the stone has the name Neerakundi inscripted on it, the original name of Doddanekundi. This clearly shows that the area existed even then. The details of the same can also be found in Epigraphia Carnatica, Bengaluru volume,” said Swaminathan Natarajan, archaeology and heritage enthusiast and resident of the area

** Two centuries after peasants bring down British flag, Tricolour to go up in Dakshina Kannada village

A small tiled-roof structure built in 1804, and which housed the British Treasury, still stands on about one acre land overlooking the village school.

When the Tricolour goes up for the first time at Banglegudde in Bellare village of Sullia taluk in Dakshina Kannada on the 75th Independence Day, it will mark a significant milestone in the history of the region. On March 30, 1837, peasants, who revolted against the British Raj for imposing high taxes on agricultural produce, had seized the British Treasury that was located at this place and had brought down the English flag.

Halakatti, the man credited with ‘reviving Lingayatism’ through his efforts of collecting and publishing ‘vachanas’ in the first half of the 20th century.

** Decoding history cast in stone

To D Ismail, the mastigallu (masti stone) is a fascinating storyteller. It talks about the history and the people as he peers into the inscrutable inscriptions whether it is in Modi lipi or Halegannada (ancient Kannada).

The epigraphist from Birur town in Chikkamagaluru district took a fancy to the knowledge hidden in stones, and is one among a small number of people who can understand ‘Modi lipi’, a cursive script used to write several languages, including Kannada.

** 3D, laser mapping of 125 monuments in 8 districts completed

The 3D and laser mapping of 125 monuments spread over 8 districts in south Karnataka region under the jurisdiction of the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Karnataka, have been completed.

The exercise was taken by the Karnataka State Council for Science and Technology (KSCST) under the Karnataka Digital Heritage project. This entails 3D mapping of 844 protected monuments across Karnataka coming under the State Department of Archaeology.

While the report pertaining to105 monuments spread over 9 districts coming under Bengaluru division was submitted last year, the report on 125 monuments under Mysuru division was submitted recently.
