** Burn victims tell their stories as part of Women’s History Month

As part of Women’s History Month, Aweksha, a newly formed women’s public trust, brought together about a dozen survivors of burns, including victims of domestic violence.

“The survivors, through their testimonies, established that most of the burn injuries endured by women are not due to stove bursts or cooking accidents, but are calculated and deliberate attempts by their spouses to take their lives,” according to a release. 

Director of the Ministry of Women and Child Development Priyanka Mary Francis and Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women Prameela Naidu, who were part of the programme, assured the survivors of the support of various government departments to ensure educational support for their children and offer of soft loans for their businesses.

** HAL-Israel sign MoU for conversion civil aircraft into Multi Mission Tanker Transport Aircraft

 In a move aimed at bolstering the ‘Make in India’ campaign, HAL has entered into a MoU with Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) to convert Civil (Passenger) aircraft to Multi Mission Tanker Transport (MMTT) aircraft in India.

The move will provide India’s defence ecosystem with new capabilities and cost effective solutions in the market. The MoU will facilitate HAL and IAI’s decades’ long expertise in developing, manufacturing and producing leading defence platforms.

The scope of MoU also covers “passenger to freighter aircraft” conversion along with MMTT conversions.

A formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Delhi by D Maiti, CEO (MiG Complex), HAL and Yaacov Berkovitz, Vice President and General Manager, Aviation Group, IAI in the presence of Chandraker Bharati, JS (Aero), Ministry of Defence, Goveernment of India.

“We are glad to join hands with our long standing partner IAI in this venture of MMTT conversion business which is one of the strategic diversification avenues identified by HAL”, said R Madhavan, CMD, HAL.

** 10th Goa Swimathon: Riding a victory wave

B’lureans participated in large numbers at the 10th Goa Swimathon which concluded recently .

 From Ironman to swimathons, Goa is also a destination for sports enthusiasts. With an overcast sky and moderate tides, the recently-concluded 10th Goa Swimathon organised by Enduro Sports at the Bambolim beach, turned out to be an exciting one, especially for Bengalureans.

The event witnessed around 333 swimmers, out of which 114 swimmers – the largest contingent – were from Bengaluru. Most of them ended up as podium finishers and winners in different age categories.  

From youngest swimmer Harshini Chander (17), winning the 1km race, to the oldest swimmer Lalitha Vijayaraghavan  (71), winning the same race under the 60+ age category, the Bengaluru contingent had a lot to celebrate.

Interestingly, the podium finishers were honoured with traditional Goan art photo frames as a token of gesture and in order to promote the creations of local artisans.

** Arka Motorsports’ Karna Kadur, co-driver Nikhil Pai wins 44th South India Rally

Meanwhile, three-time APRC champion Gaurav Gill (Musa Sherif), who had retired on Saturday with a mechanical failure but restarted on Sunday, eventually finished second behind Kadur.

 Bengaluru pair of Karna Kadur and co-driver Nikhil Pai (Arka Motorsports) kept their nerves to win the 44th South India Rally, which is a round of the FIA Asia-Pacific Rally Championship (Asia Cup) and the concluding round of the FMSCI Indian National Rally Championship 2021 here on Sunday.

Even as Kadur and Pai celebrated their Asia Cup (India leg) victory on their APRC debut, Himachal’s Aditya Thakur and co-driver Virender Kashyap (Chettinad Sporting) clinched their maiden national championship title (overall), though provisionally, and subject to the outcome of an appeal pending before the Indian Motor Sports Appeal Court.

** Karnataka emerges as top seller of renewable energy under Green Term Ahead Market 

Karnataka ranks first in renewable rich States with 15 GW of installed capacity base and another 9 GW of green capacity being under implementation

Karnataka distribution companies (discoms) have become the top seller of renewable energy under the Green Term Ahead Market (GTAM) at the Indian Energy Exchange Limited (IEX).

Power Company of Karnataka Limited (PCKL) has a market share of 74% on the sell side in IEX GTAM market since its inception, selling 2.67 billion units (BU) out of 3.6 BU on the exchange till January, 2022, IEX officials said, adding that Karnataka is now also leveraging the recently commenced Green Day Ahead Market (GDAM) for sale of its surplus renewable power.

** Bengaluru-based Ricky Kej wins second Grammy

The US-born musician shared the award with Stewart Copeland, the drummer of the iconic British rock band The Police, who collaborated with Kej on the album.

 Music composer Ricky Kej, based out of Bengaluru, has won his second Grammy in the best new album category for ‘Divine Tides’.

“So grateful to have won the Grammy Award for our album ‘Divine Tides’. Absolutely love this living-legend standing next to me – Stewart Copeland. Love all of you too! This is my 2nd Grammy Award and Stewart’s 6th,” he wrote alongside a picture with Copeland.

In 2015, Kej took home a Grammy in the best new age album category for ‘Winds of Samsara’.

** Francis Buchanan’s book translated to Kannada

Francis Buchanan-Hamilton’s book ‘A Journey from Madras through the Countries of Mysore, Canara and Malabar’ has been translated into Kannada. 

The popular Scottish physician made significant contributions as a geographer, zoologist, and botanist while living in India under the East India Company. The book originally published in 1807 talks at length about the people, culture and customs of of the region.

“He was appointed by the East India Company to survey these regions, to help them better administer the people. It is a great research material,” says Shailaja G P, translator of the book.

HAL scales new peak, sees revenue of over Rs 24K crore

Aerospace giant Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has recorded the highest ever revenue of over Rs 24,000 crore (provisional and unaudited) for the financial year ending March 31, 2022, registering a 6 % revenue growth over the previous financial year. The corresponding figure for the previous year stood at Rs 22,755 crore.

“Despite the challenges of the second wave of Covid-19 during the first quarter of the year and the consequent production loss, the Company could meet the targeted revenue growth with improved performance during the balance period of the year”, said R Madhavan, Chairman & Managing Director, HAL.

HAL achieved record revenue with the production of 44 new helicopters/aircraft, 84 new engines, overhauled 203 aircraft/helicopters and 478 engines.
