** Eye care centre launches ‘reverse diabetes’ initiative

Diabetes is a common cause for blindness in the 20-75 age group

With diabetes being a common cause of blindness in the 20-75 age group and high blood sugar leading to diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema, cataract, and glaucoma, a Bengaluru-based eye care centre has launched a ‘reverse diabetes’ initiative.

Under the initiative, Narayana Nethralaya will set up an exclusive clinic manned by a team of 15 specialists to address and treat diabetic eye diseases.

Addressing mediapersons, K. Bhujang Shetty, chairman and managing director of Narayana Nethralaya, said nearly 70% of the 1,500 patients seen on a daily basis come with diabetic eye diseases. “The team will work towards assisting patients on methods to reverse diabetes, and spread awareness about complications that diabetes can cause,” he said.

** Young innovator develops a host of apps

At age 14, Prajwal N.H. is a certified Python programmer, Azure AI engineer, and a scrum master. He is also the co-founder of a startup called CloudAttack, a cloud computing company.

The young softech enthusiast has developed six applications that have received recognition at various levels. He recently received confirmation from the ‘India Book of Records’ recognising him as the ‘Youngest certified Azure AI engineer associate’.

** Award for TIFR scientist for work on celestial bodies

The Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA), Bengaluru, has awarded the Professor Peraiah Foundation Award for 2021 to Dr Shravan Hanasoge of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) in Mumbai for his work on deciphering the internal structure of the sun, stars and the earth.

** Infosys, Karnataka govt to promote skilling under NEP

It giant Infosys and the Department of Higher Education have decided to sign three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to promote skill-based learning among college students as part of the National Education Policy (NEP).

Other platforms on the anvil for colleges are ‘Campus Connect’ for digital learning of college faculty and professional guidance for students. 

** NCBS scientists develop Dengue DNA vaccine candidate

Prof. Sudhir Krishna, the senior author and anchor of the Dengue vaccine development program at National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bengaluru, and Distinguished visiting professor IIT Goa explained to TNIE that this is our third Indo African manuscript in 2021. 

NCBS scientists in collaboration with several institutes have developed a Dengue DNA vaccine candidate. The preprint paper published in MedRxiv titled ‘Immune profile and responses of a novel Dengue DNA vaccine encoding EDIII-NS1 consensus design based on Indo-African sequences’ aims to address some of the key problems existing with developing a vaccine for dengue.

** Bengaluru: HAL enters civil aviation with AAAL for Do-228 aircraft to Arunachal Pradesh

India’s Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS) received a major boost with HAL signing a lease agreement with Alliance Air Aviation Limited (AAAL) on Sunday for the supply of two Civil Do-228 aircraft for regional operations in Arunachal Pradesh.

Apurba Roy, General Manager, Transport Aircraft Division, Kanpur, HAL and Arun Kumar Bansal, Head of Engineering, Alliance Air Aviation Limited signed the deal papers in Bengaluru.

** Brahmavar: ‘Hanging Bridge’ Girish Bharadwaj chosen for Shivaram Karanth Huttoora Prashanti

 The selection committee formed for the purpose has chosen Girish Bharadwaj from Sullia for awarding of the prestigious ‘Dr Shivaram Karanth Huttoora Prashanti – 2021’. This award has been jointly instituted by Kotathattu gram panchayat and Dr Karanth Huttoora Prashasti Foundation.

Fondly known with the name, ‘Setubandhu’, Girish Bharadwaj has lighted up the lives of rural people by building 130 hanging bridges. He also is active in social service. Considering his achievements, the union government has conferred the ‘Padma Shri’ civil honour on him.
