In what is a first for India, scientists from the Raman Research Institute (RRI) have made a breakthrough in quantum communications technology which has major military, banking and election security applications.

** Karnataka first state to vaccinate over 1 lakh people with second dose

Karnataka has so far inoculated 1,13,830 beneficiaries with the second dose of Covid-19 vaccine, and is the first state in the country to completely vaccinate more than one lakh beneficiaries with the two doses. As of February 21, a total of 8,21,939 health care workers and 2,84,950 front line workers had registered for the vaccination.

** NIMHANS to be part of global project to tackle encephalitis

NIMHANS will be a part of an international project, ‘Brain Infections Global’, funded by the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR), Liverpool, U.K. The other collaborating centre in India is Christian Medical College, Vellore. Two other nations – Malawi in Africa and Brazil in South America – are also participating.

** B’luru institute takes big leap in quantum communication

Researchers team headed by Urbasi Sinha at the Raman Research Institute (RRI) successfully demonstrated free space quantum distribution key between two buildings in the institute using an atmospheric channel.

This is the first time the technique – called entanglement-based quantum-key distribution – has been demonstrated using ground stations based in RRI at a distance of 50 meters apart.

** Mangaluru: Renowned Konkani writer Herolpius passes away at 67

Well-known Konkani writer Gratian Pius D’Silva (nom de plume Herolpius) has passed away at the age of 67 in his residence on Monday, February 22.

He worked in the Government of India’s central department at various positions and retired as the immigration director of Mangaluru International Airport.

He was the recipient of the prestigious ‘Daiji Dubai Literary Puroskar’ for the year 2012.
