** Puttur: Youth dumps IT job, enriches land fertility with dung-based manure

The experiment made by an engineering graduate from Puttur taluk to use dung powder as an alternative to chemical fertiliser and thereby improving the yield, has succeeded. We keep hearing about the efforts being successfully made by farmers to rid the land of chemical fertiliser. Jayaguru Achar, a resident of Hindaru village in the taluk, has given the field of organic farming a new weapon in the form of dung powder. He does not use chemical fertiliser, and is entirely dependent on dung manure. He has improved fertility and got increased yield.

Eshwar Malpe, who has rescued about 20 people from drowning and retrieved 200 bodies of those who unfortunately couldn’t make it.

 A supplier of potable water to fishing boats, 45-year-old Eshwar is a self-taught underwater search and recovery expert. A godsend, his selfless timely acts of courage have offered a new lease of life to those who were otherwise doomed to a watery grave.

** Bengaluru institute alumnus bags National Social Scheme award

Sirish Govardhan, an alumnus and National Social Scheme (NSS) volunteer of KS Institute of Technology, Bengaluru, was honoured with the prestigious NSS National Award for 2019-20. The award was conferred by President Ram Nath Kovind on the occasion of NSS Day on September 24 in New Delhi.

Along with Govardhan, Bindya L, an NSS volunteer of Govinda Das Degree College in Mangaluru, too received the award. “It is after six years that someone from Karnataka has got the award in the boy’s category and after four years in the girl’s category. It is also for the first time that a boy and a girl received the award together,” said Govardhan, who graduated from KSIT in 2020.

Meghan HK, a CBSE student of Pramati Hill View Academy in Mysuru, secured the top rank in all streams of CET — engineering, bachelor of naturopathy and yogic sciences (BNYS), agriculture, veterinary science and pharmacy. 

This is the first time any student has topped all the streams, including engineering.

Jacob also uses his spare time to volunteer for Bengaluru-based NGO, ASHA, which provides education and support to children with severe disabilities and autism.

A couple of months ago, Rohan Jacob, a Class 11 student from Canadian International School (CIS) watched his mother volunteering as an online teacher for a refugee centre in Malaysia.

Inspired by his mother’s service towards society, Jacob too signed up as a volunteer at the Zotung Refugee Catholic Learning Centre (ZRCLC) in Kuala Lumpur, to help students and teachers use Google Classroom that he learned in school.

** Prof CR Rao Centenary Gold Medal for Bhagwati, Rangarajan

Dr Rangarajan is the former chairman, Economic Advisory Council of the Prime Minister and former governor, Reserve Bank of India (RBI).

The Indian Econometric Society (TIES) Trust has conferred the inaugural Prof CR Rao Centenary Gold Medal (CGM) to two distinguished Indian scholars — Dr Jagdish Bhagwati and Dr C Rangarajan.

Dr Bhagwati is a professor of economics, law and international relations at Columbia University and Director of the Raj Centre on Indian Economic Policies. Dr Rangarajan is the former chairman, Economic Advisory Council of the Prime Minister and former governor, Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
