** IIHR develops new water-conserving irrigation method
The new one, a hybrid version of two hydroponics models, requires only a tenth of water used in drip irrigation
Scientists at the Hesaraghatta-based Indian Institute of Horticultural Research (IIHR) have developed a new irrigation method, which conserves even more water than drip irrigation.
** In two panchayats of Karnataka, women are presidents where their husbands work as peons
In Ballari, Fakirappa has also been employed as the peon for the last 20 years in Hirehegdal village of Kudligi taluk. His wife, Ashwini, was elected in GP polls with 212 votes and has got the chance to serve the villagers as president of the Panchayat.
In Baichavalli village of Hangal taluk in Haveri district, Basavaraj has been working as a peon for the last 23 years. In the GP elections held in December 2020, his wife Gangamalamma was recently elected as president of the Panchayat.
** Karnataka gets 31st district; govt issues notification carving Vijayanagara out of Ballari
The new district will have six taluks and Hosapete will be its headquarters. Kudligi, Hagaribommana halli, Kotturu, Hoovina Hadagali, and Harapanahalli are the other five taluks.
** Two startups sign pact to launch space taxis
Two space startups — Skyroot Aerospace and Bellatrix Aerospace who had both won this year’s National Startup Awards — on Monday entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to use the Orbital Transfer Vehicle (OTV) being developed by Bellatrix in the upper stage of Vikram series of launch vehicles being developed by Skyroot.
** Karnataka: All-woman Garuda team in the making
Seventeen young women, mostly from villages across Karnataka, are training to shoot, handle explosives, rappel, rope walk, handle terror, as they build grit and endurance, for 12 hours a day.
What will emerge is a lean, mean team — the first batch of the all-woman Garuda commandos of the Karnataka Police.
** Arjuna and Padma Shri awardees felicitated in Karnataka
The Basketball Federation of India felicitated sportsperson who received Arjuna, Dhyan Chand and Padma Shri Awardees between 1961 and 2019 for their contribution and achievements in basketball.
The felicitation programme was held at Karnataka Olympic Bhawan, Kanteerava Sports Complex, on Saturday. Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai felicitated over eight former basketball players.
** Social activist Sharada Acharya dead
Ms. Acharya was the member of the Manglauru City Municipal Council for three terms.
She was the vice-president of the Karnataka unit of Jan Sangh for nine years and was in the prison during Emergency.
She was the Janata Party candidate from the Mangalore Assembly Constituency in the State Assembly elections in 1978.
She was active in Bharat Scouts and Guides and was the treasurer of the Siri Horticulture Association.
She leaves behind two sons, including RSS Mangaluru City Corporation unit joint convenor Sunil Acharya, and a daughter.
** Class 7 student skips her way to Golden Book of World Records
Class 7 student Tanushree Pithrody from Udupi on Saturday set a record by performing 55 backward body skips in a minute. A provisional certificate of the Golden Book of World Records was handed over to her.
