** Statue in Karnataka was Hanuman’s wish: CM Bommai

Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Sunday said that there will be good times ahead for Karnataka as he unveiled the the 161-ft tall Panchamukhi Anjaneya Swamy statue, touted to be the world’s tallest, installed by Basaveshwara Mutt at Bidanagere in Kunigal taluk of Tumakuru district.

“Panchamukhi Anjaneya is a special form of Hanuman, which is mentioned in the Ramayana.

Hanuman took this form for the welfare of the world. It is the divine wish of Hanuman to have his 161-ft tall statue installed in Karnataka. The sculptors have done a wonderful job,” Bommai added.

In an inconspicuous corner of Bagalur Layout in Bengaluru, lives the city’s ‘Sparrow Man’. Edwin Joseph, 72, is visited by a host of sparrows, squirrels, a few pigeons and even bulbuls, and he is popular both as the sparrow whisperer and a Good Samaritan.

For almost 15 years now, Edwin has woken up to the chirping of sparrows at his window. He feeds them millets and sometimes khara mixture, rice, roti, and anything that is cooked for the household

** Winners Of Rajiv Gandhi Cup Football Tournament

The Tamil Nadu’s Women Police team and Bengaluru’s Austin Town team have emerged winners in Women and Men Division of the State-level Rajiv Gandhi Cup Football Tournament organised by Mysuru District Rural Youth Congress Committee at the Railway Grounds on Manandavadi Road here yesterday.

In the finals of the three-day tournament, the Tamil Nadu’s women defeated Bengaluru’s Modern Girls’ team 10-7 points. Mythri of Modern Girls team and Shravanya, goalkeeper of Tamil Nadu’s Women Police team, bagged the Best Performers award. National Youth Football players Simran Bhargav, Triya Menon and Indumati were felicitated on the occasion.

‘Walking through our Village’ together with ‘Young Mind’s Thoughts’, a unique three-day art exhibition comprising two generations Peter Lewis, a proven master in the art field and his talented granddaughter Rheanne Amelda Lewis, was inaugurated on April 7 at Fortune Atrium Hotel here.

** Bengaluru joins global network of silk cities

Bengaluru has become the first Indian city to get into the global network of silk cities, celebrated French textile artist Isabelle Moulin said in Kolkata, expressing hope that in the next few years West Bengal’s Murshidabad district — known to produce fine silk in the over the past 300 years — may join the global silk city network.

“Two days ago, I launched the membership of Bengaluru — the first Indian city in the global Silk City network. Now, we have nine countries and 13 cities. If everything goes fine, then with time, I hope ‘Murshidabad Silk’ too can make it to the network. The network helps artisans and craftsmen to exchange knowledge, build trade relations and understand various craftsmanship techniques,” Ms. Moulin said during an interactive session with select media persons at Kolkata’s Oxford Bookstore.

** Classical Kannada Centre To Be Shifted To Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion

With Kannada and Culture Minister V. Sunil Kumar set to visit Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion in Manasagangothri campus on Apr. 13 as part of the plans to shift the Centre of Excellence for Studies in Classical Kannada (CESCK) to the Mansion, Mysuru-Kodagu MP Pratap Simha this morning inspected the Mansion and held a preliminary meeting in this regard.

Addressing the meeting, Simha said that a proposal along with the DPR (Detailed Project Report) has been sent to the State Government for shifting CESCK to Jayalakshmi Vilas Mansion from its current location at National Centre for History of Science (NCHS) of University of Mysore (UoM), which is housed in the old Tahsildar office building in Manasagangothri campus opposite Premier Studio on Hunsur Road here.

** 90 toppers to receive gold medals at BCU’s first convocation tomorrow

Ninety toppers will be awarded with gold medals and cash prizes at the first convocation of Bengaluru City University that will be held on Monday. Honorary doctorates will also be conferred on V. Ravichandran (cinema), M.R. Jaishankar (social service) and Sathyanarayana (medicine).

Prof. Gandhi said that seven donors had each contributed ₹6 lakh, which has since been deposited. The university will be getting ₹30,000 as interest from each of the endowments, of which ₹20,000 will be given away as cash prize and ₹10,000 will be used for the gold medals. The varsity medals will originally be made of silver, which will be dipped in gold, he said.

A total of 690 students across programmes, nine of whom were awarded gold medals, graduated from the institute.

Covid-19: NGO finds a way to improve learning retention among children in rural Karnataka

An out-of-the-box thinking, which led to educated senior students mentoring their juniors during the Covid-19 pandemic, has resulted in better learning retention in a few villages in Mysuru district.

Conceived by Pratham Mysore, an NGO working in the field of education, the Student Mentoring Programme (SMP) has caught the imagination of a few educationists who intend to introduce mentoring as a compulsory subject in the B.Ed course.

Explaining the genesis of Student Mentoring Programme, Ashvini Ranjan, who is pioneering Pratham Mysore’s activities in the region, said that the NGO had launched a Model Village Programme in 2017. Under this programme, it adopted Hyaknur, Mavinahalli, Sujjalur and Muthathi in T. Narsipura taluk to shore up the learning abilities of children in government schools.
